Free contest, The Caribbean Studies Center International Competition, prize: 3 winners of $500

Deadline: 1 October 2011

The Caribbean Studies Center of the Casa de las Américas announces the International Competition for young students and researchers Caliban, origen y permanencia de un símbolo (Caliban: the origin and the permanence of a symbol), on the occasion of half a century of “The Pleasures of Exile” by Georges Lamming and forty years of the essay “Caliban” by Roberto Fernández Retamar.

After the writer from Barbados entered the symbol into Caribbean cultural studies in the 1960s, there have been a myriad of interpretations and reflections issuing from the outstanding voices of the region’s philosophy and literature. In his work, Lanning sketches the principal questions deriving from the Caribbean colonial condition, as perceived in the conceptual character of Caliban. Each one of these today reveals itself as open theoretical keys, available to a legion of reinterpretation from the contemporary stage.

Thus, analyses might include topics such as colony-metropolis relations, centre-periphery dynamics, slavery and freedom, the condition of cimarronaje, rebellion and revolution; the processes of de-colonization, migration, exile and Diaspora; violence, resistance and marginality; phenomena of culture, race, religious beliefs, diversity, gender and sexuality; or those associated with language, oral tradition and memory.
