We welcome submissions from freelance writers. In our magazine and on our website, we publish several feature articles on a variety of topics. Features require thorough research (citing a minimum of three reliable sources), knowledge of our audience, and concise interviewing and writing skills. Our print magazine publishes features related to its monthly themes.
We prefer articles and essays with local relevancy. Word counts for articles vary from 500 to 1,200 words. If you wish to query the editor, please include a story outline and previously published writing samples. Please remember that we receive many more submissions than we can use. We may not be able to respond personally to every query.
Submit articles/queries to:
Myra Wright, General Manager & Editor, editor@piedmontparent.com
Karen M. Alley, Web Editor, webeditor@piedmontparent.com
Articles should be e-mailed as Microsoft Word documents. Please include author's name, address and daytime phone number on the first page of the story. Include the word count with the article. Writers should be familiar with AP style. We also use Webster's New World Dictionary. The editor reserves the right to edit for clarity, length and style. If major revisions are needed, you will be contacted.
Accompanying photographs (along with written permission) are welcome. We accept digital photos at a minimum of 300 dpi.
Deadlines
Two to three months before the date of the issue.
Payment
Fees vary depending on the length and depth of the story. Typically, we pay between $35 and $110 per story. Writers are paid by the end of the publication month. We do not pay kill fees. We usually buy one-time print rights with exclusivity within our region and also post the story on our website. Reprints of articles from publications outside our region are also considered.
