Free contest, Center for International Media Ethics Essay Writing Competition, prize: J-ethinomics scholarship

Deadline: 14 November 2010

CIME ETHICONTEST

The Center for International Media Ethics proudly launches its first media ethics contest for journalists and media professionals from all over the world! The CIME Ethicontest is an essay writing competition open to both aspiring and established writers, journalists, freelancers and students. Judged by renowned journalist and author Geoffrey Nyarota in association with CIME, the CIME Ethicontest is the first contest of its kind launched by the Center for International Media Ethics.

The Essay:

Dissemination of information: government interests, national security and freedom of speech - how to strike the right balance?

In an age where restricting information is increasingly hard for government agencies, increased power of the news media calls for an increased responsibility. Is it ok for the media to tell the truth to the public when national security is at risk? How does a journalist decide if his/her reporting compromises government interests? How does the media avoid confrontation with the government in the wake of such a scenario?

The Essays should be no longer than 2000 words.

The Winners of the Ethicontest:

The winner of the CIME Ethicontest will be awarded a scholarship to become certified in J-Ethinomics. In addition, the best pieces will be published on the CIME website and in the CIME newsletter.

Building a solid public trust is a daunting task, but only this can assure the future of the media industry. CIME brings together a global network of journalists to provide training and expertise in the ethics of their profession. J-Ethinomics courses at CIME aim to teach participants how ethical practices build trust and ensure a successful and socially responsible career as a journalist.

The J-Ethinomics training provides a great opportunity for journalists and writers from around the world - regardless of age, nationality or financial background - to showcase their talent and receive J-Ethinomics certification. This experience would perfectly compliment your academic and professional background by providing a more ethical approach to your work and boosting your credentials.

About the Judge:

The Essays will be reviewed and evaluated by acclaimed Zimbabwean journalist Geoffrey Nyarota, in association with CIME. As a renowned journalist and author, Mr. Nyarota is the recipient of nine international media awards, including the CPJ International Press Freedom Award (2001), the Golden Pen of Freedom Award (2002) and the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize (2002).
