RTÉ RADIO 1 SHORT STORY COMPETITION
The RTÉ Radio 1 Short Story Competition was founded in memory of Francis Mac Manus, the Kilkenny born novelist, biographer and former Head of Talks and Features at Radio Eireann. Over the past 25 years the competition has proved to be a launching pad for several new and emerging Irish writers and continues to offer a platform for the best of contemporary Irish fiction. Since 1985 over 500 stories from the competition have been broadcast. Among the names who have featured and who have gone on to win national and international acclaim are Claire Keegan, Molly Mc Closkey, Anthony Glavin, Mary O’Donnell and Ivy Bannister.
The author of the overall winning story will receive €3,000 with prizes of €2,000 and €1,000 awarded to the second and third prize winners. RTÉ Radio 1 will broadcast each of the winning stories and all of the shortlisted entries. The closing date for entries is Friday 31st December 2010 and the results will be announced in May 2011.
The Judges for the 2011 Competition are :
JOHN MAC KENNA – award winning RTÉ Radio producer and author of thirteen books – novels, short stories and non-fiction. He has written for and directed widely in the theatre. He teaches creative writing and media studies.
MOLLY MC CLOSKEY – American born author living in Ireland. She has published collections of short stories, a novel and several essays and articles. Winner of the Francis Mac Manus Competition in 1995. In June 2011 she will publish her first work of nonfiction, an account of schizophrenia within her family.
ALAN TITLEY – Professor of Modern Irish at University College Cork.Author of several novels and collections of short stories, as well as literary studies and essays. He has also written many plays which have been produced in Ireland and abroad. He is a weekly columnist with The Irish Times and frequent broadcaster on radio and television.
Rules and Regulations
(1) The competition is open to people born or normally resident in Ireland.
(2) Only one entry per person is allowed.
(3) Entries, in Irish or English, should be the original work of the author and should not have been previously published or broadcast.
(4) Entries should be written for radio and should be within the range of 1,800 to 2,000 words. Scripts outside of this word range will not be considered.
(5) Entries should be double spaced and typewritten on one side of A4 paper. The author’s name should not appear on the typescript but should be clearly written on the accompanying entry form. Faxed or e-mailed submissions are not accepted.
(6) The author is advised to retain a copy of his/her entry as RTÉ cannot return scripts.
(7) Entries will be accepted from Friday 1st October to Friday 31st December 2010.
(8) The decision of the judges is final and RTÉ cannot enter into any correspondence concerning the judging or merits of any entry.
(9) Each submission – in an A4 envelope and accompanied by a completed entry form - should be sent to:
