Free contest, Echoes of the Right to God International Writing Contest (February), prize: $100

Deadline: 15 February 2011

Echoes of the Right to God Contest Rules

The contest:

This month's contest is open to essays, fiction and poetry in adult and youth categories. The topic is wide open: everyday people and their (your) personal connection to God. All entries will also be considered for publication in the 2011 book, Echoes of the Right to God from everyday people.

First prize is $100 for each category and publication in Echoes of The Right to God online magazine (and possible publication in a future print compilation).

The categories are:

  • Youth: 15 and under
  • Adult: 16 and over (note that adult category winners under 18 require parent or guardian permissions)

Rules and Guidelines

1. Judging: Entries will be judged equally on "inspiration, thoughtfulness or creativity" and "quality of writing." We may ask for revisions of the winning essay before publication.
2. Entries remain the intellectual property of the entrant. Non-winning entries will not be returned and will be destroyed. Please do not send your only copy of your work.
3. Entries must be your original work and previously unpublished. Essays must be true and your own thoughts. Fiction and poetry must be your own original work and previously unpublished. We're looking for works that are inspirational and thoughtful. They also must fit within the overall theme of Echoes of the Right to God, from the view of everyday people. Works previously published on your personal blog are eligible.
4. Word limit is approximately 1,000 words, but if you need more words to tell your story, there's no penalty for going over. There's also no harm in using very few words to tell a powerful story.
5. A co-authored entry would be unusual, because it's your personal experience, but would be eligible and any prize money will be sent to the first person listed to be divided by the authors.
6. For winners under 18, a parent or guardian will be asked to authorize publication and acceptance of the prize.
7. First prize for adults is $100 and publication in Echoes of The Right to God online magazine. First prize for Youth is $100 and publication in Echoes of The Right to God online magazine. Additional prizes may be awarded, at the discretion of the judges. We also reserve the right not to award any prize, should no suitable entries be received. Winners are responsible for any taxes or fees.
8. Winner agrees to grant exclusive first publication rights to Echoes of the Right to God online magazine and may include publication in a print compilation of winning entries. Winner also agrees that subsequent publication will acknowledge first publication in Echoes of The Right to God online magazine.
9. Eligibility: Contest opens December 15, 2010. Entry deadline is February 15, 2011. Winner will be announced by approximately March 15, 2011. Immediate family members of the judges and magazine publishers (Ron and Jennie Dugan) are ineligible to win. However, family members of the judges and publishers are eligible to submit works for the 2011 print compilation. Authors will be contacted for permission prior to publication in the print compilation.
10. No purchase is necessary.
11. Entries may be submitted by email or postal mail. By email, include the essay, story or poetry in the body of your email. If formatting is important, as with poetry, you may also include it as an attachment. Include your name and contact information. NOTE: We contact finalists prior to the final decision to confirm that your work is original and previously unpublished and to request any permissions needed to revise to fit our tone and length. Be sure to watch your emails!
