Free contest, BooksBNimble Short Story Writing Contest, prize: $50

Deadline: 15 March 2011

Contests

Every two months, booksBnimble will be holding two contests worth $50 each! The first contest will be a traditional writing contest: Enter your short story/novella/poetry about the month’s topic and it will be judged by our contributing editors. The winner will receive $50, and the top story will be published on our site, and later anthologized with our usual 50/50 split on royalties. You can make your story/novella/poem as long as you want, but be sure to stick to the specified format (i.e. either a short story, or a poem, or a novella- we will tell you which we are looking for that month). The second contest will be a vidlet contest: same idea as the writing contest, but you enter your original vidlet into our gladiatorial ring for a chance at 50 bucks and the vidlet Hall of Fame! You can find an example for a vidlet script at the bottom of the page.

FEBRUARY/MARCH CONTESTS:

SHORT STORIES: “FIFTY BUCKS SAYS JULIET’S A VAMPIRE”

In honor of Valentine’s Day, our February/March theme will be “Romeo or Juliet as a vampire.” Just this once, in honor of the sweetness of the season, you have a choice. Either lover can be undead. Or you can make them both vampires–that could be raucous. But sexy’s good too. The deadline’s March 15, and the winner will be announced at the beginning in April. This is part of our 2011 series of vampire contests, the winners of which we’ll publish as an anthology at the end of the year . Don’t forget the best part: Along with publication, there’s a $50 prize.

VIDLETS: ACTION HERO PETS!

Our vidlet for the month is Action Hero Pets! Does your cat Hulk-out after a little kitty-nip? Have a canine Captain Marvel? Remember “Fist of Fury?” Now you can make it “Fist of Furry!” Write a little scene, get out your camera, and make your pet a star!

Stories must be 2000-5000 words in length, pasted within the body of an email and received before January 15—do not send attachments! If your story is selected as a winner, you agree to give us first English language rights, for publication in an anthology next year (see below). After that, it’s yours to sell again as many times as you like. And you can sell the foreign rights the minute you write it. Our split is 50-50, as always. (Though in this case, it’s 50% for booksBnimble, and 50 % for all the authors. So you may not make a lot, but neither will we—it’s mostly just for fun.)

VAMPIRE ANTHOLOGY

Mike Talbert’s playful way with a well-known character as a vampire also inspired us to gear all this year’s contests to famous people (real or fictional) as vampires, with the aim of collecting them in an anthology at the end of the year. So not only has Mike won the $50 prize, he’ll get his story published and has a chance to make even more money. (We mention this to encourage aspiring entrants. Listen up: We’re a roomful of editors just dying to read your stories. How often does that happen?) The anthology will include not just the winners, but all the stories we get that we love. So if you started a Holmes story you didn’t finish, you get a second chance. Go ahead and finish it and try it out on us. Email your submission to: contests@booksbnimble.com. We look forward to reading!
