Our company is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, was named a Top 100 Website of 2010 by PC Magazine and is currently used by hundreds of thousands of consumers every month.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced journalist or writer who is passionate about helping consumers. An ideal candidate would also have the ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced environment and possess broad knowledge of online services. Being a fast learner is also critical as our Consumer Advocacy Writers will need to cover a broad range of topics from reporting on the latest online scams to uncovering the highest quality websites in a given subject (e.g., travel, health, personal finance and consumer electronics).
As part of the hiring process, leading candidates will be asked to write several assignments for the website at our freelance rate of $50 per 300 word article. We do this to give candidates a better sense of our company and the position, as well as allow us to see your skills applied to the work we do. Excellent part-time writers will have the opportunity to grow into full-time positions and play a larger role in the company.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience writing for a general audience for a print or
- online publication.
- Strong online research skills: you will often need to quickly find information online from
- reliable sources.
- Fast learner with the capacity to rapidly acquire expertise on a broad range of subjects.
- Good judgment: the information we provide is often crucial to the consumers who read it,
- so it's imperative we only publish work of the highest quality.
- Flexibility: we need someone who can juggle more than one assignment at a time and
- switch easily between disparate topics.
- Attention to detail: all writing and facts must be error free.
- Ability to write clearly and concisely: more Old Man and the Sea and less Finnegans
- Wake.
- Integrity: above all else, our company and employees must always stand for doing the
- right thing for the consumers that depend on us.
Preferred Experience:
- Work experience in print journalism
- Knowledge of range of subject areas including seniors, travel, health, personal finance,
- adult education and consumer electronics.
- Experience consistently writing high-quality, objective information under a deadline.
