Free to enter, RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Poets, prize: $1000 (Canada)

Established in memory of poet Bronwen Wallace, who died at the age of 44, this award alternates each year between short fiction and poetry. This year’ prize will be in the category of poetry. As Ms. Wallace’s first book was not published until she was 35, this annual award of $5,000 is given to a writer below the age of 35 who has yet to be published in book form. Two finalists will each receive $1,000.

* The writer must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, under the age of 35 (as of the submission deadline), unpublished in book form, and without a book contract, but whose work has appeared in at least one independently edited magazine or anthology.

* Applicants should submit no more than 5-10 pages of previously unpublished poetry in English.

* A cover sheet must accompany the manuscript and verify that the applicant meets the stated eligibility criteria. The writer’s name, address, and telephone number should only appear on the cover sheet. All pages should be unstapled and consecutively numbered. Entries will not be returned. The deadline for submissions is (extended to) January 17, 2011.

* A jury composed of three established writers will select the winner and finalists.
