Creative Scotland’s ‘Creative Futures’ is an ambitious programme of residencies and related activities designed to promote the professional development, vision, connectivity and ambitions of Scotland’s creative practitioners and organisations.



Structured around key themes, and supported by independent evaluation, online networking and cross-programme events, Creative Futures will develop a powerful and coherent narrative for investment in individuals. With between 100 and 200 individual participants annually, it is the largest co-ordinated residency programme in Europe, and includes residencies that are single discipline, interdisciplinary, cross sectoral and international.



Screenwriting Residencies



Our inspirational aim – to produce best screenwriters in the world.



The programme consists of a residential training programme in Scotland, which will support you over a five month period to develop a specific feature film script. Participants will work with high level experienced mentors, including mentor tutors from Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam. There will be three residential meetings with writers expected to work on their film between meetings.



Selected participants will also be given the opportunity to present to potential producers at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2012.



The workshop weekends will take place in November 2011, February 2012 and April 2012. This valuable development opportunity is free of charge to participants.



There will also be two public events with seminal speakers from the film world to inspire writing for screen in Scotland. Participants in the Screen Writing Residency will take part in master classes with those seminal speakers.

Free to enter, APsaA Essay Prize in Psychoanalysis and Culture, prize: $1,000 (USA)

The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) has issued a call for submissions for the 2011 Essay Prize in Psychoanalysis and Culture. APsaA’s Committee on Research and Special Training (CORST) encourages the involvement of higher education academics in psychoanalysis and works with them to stimulate interest in psychoanalysis at the university level. Academics may submit essays on psychoanalytically informed research in the bio-behavioral sciences, social sciences, arts and/or humanities.



The winning essay will be presented at APsaA’s 2012 National Meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City and will be reviewed for publication by the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA). Additionally, the winner will receive a $1,000 prize and up to $1,000 in reimbursed expenses for hotel, airfare and/or travel to attend the award presentation on Jan. 13th, 2012.



Submission Guidelines:



The essay should be no more than 30 pages in length and should neither have been published or submitted for publication to other journals.



The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, September 6, 2011.



The CORST Essay Prize is open to anyone - regardless of institutional status or affiliation.

Guidelines for Original Fiction

All types of fantasy are welcome — high fantasy, contemporary urban tales, surrealism, magical realism, science fantasy, folktales…and anything and everything in between. We believe that the fantasy genre’s diversity is its greatest strength, and we wish that viewpoint to be reflected in our story content and our submission queues; we welcome submissions from writers of every race, religion, nationality, gender, and sexual orientation.

Fantasy publishes two reprints each month, but it is primarily a market for original fiction; a majority of our reprints will be directly solicited, but you may submit a reprint for consideration if you wish. For reprints, we are offering 1¢/word, on acceptance. However, we are only interested in considering stories for reprint that are not currently available online in any form. Rejections & Response Times



Be aware that every month we receive several hundred submissions. As such, we cannot offer personalized feedback on each story. If we say, “send more,” however, it does mean that we hope to see something else from you.



Most rejections will be sent out within two business days, while stories being seriously considered may be held for up to two weeks.



Please do not respond to rejection letters, even just to say “Thanks for the quick turnaround” etc. We appreciate the thought, but it is unnecessary and will just clutter up our editorial inbox.

The Burlington Contemporary Writing Prize, to be awarded annually, seeks to discover talented young writers on contemporary art. The Prize winner will receive £1000, and will have the opportunity to publish a review of a contemporary art exhibition in The Burlington Magazine.

Stock up on coffee and dust off your lucky mug. Pat the Dog Playwright Centre is thrilled to announce we are hosting our third annual 24-hour playwriting contest. This means 30 adrenaline-pumped writers from across Ontario will be hitting the keyboards from 4:00 PM on Friday, September 30, 2011 to 4:00 PM Saturday, October 1, 2010.



All contestants write off-site, so you can write at home, in a coffee shop, on a bus… the location is up to you. There’s no entry fee and no restriction on final script length. All you have to do is write an original play using three secret words — in 24 hours. How easy it that?



Not very. But the rewards could be great. Our winning playwrights are everywhere!



Rules & Regulations:



The contest is open to anyone living in Ontario, except contest Jurors. Space is limited to the first 30 entrants, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To enter, just fill out our online form here.



Entrants can work from a page of prepared notes, but all plays are to be original works.

TCR publishes high quality literary fiction characterized by interest in language, development of distinctive settings, compelling conflict, and complex, unique characters. Please read a sample copy. Fiction should be double-spaced with numbered pages and one-inch margins. Submit only one story or up to three short-shorts (500-1,000 words each) per envelope. We consider longer stories of up to 6,000 words and novellas.



POETRY



TCR publishes excellent poetry of all types, including informal personal narratives, prose poems, and formal poems. We consider English translations of poetry from other languages, in which case a brief biography of the poet and translator should be included. Poetry should be single-spaced and include three to five poems per submission.



NONFICTION



TCR publishes distinctive topical essays and personal creative nonfiction of any kind; this includes pieces that might fit into the memoir, travel, and historical nonfiction categories. We are not an academic journal and publish for a general readership. Above all, we are interested in publishing nonfiction that surprises and intrigues us.



INTERVIEWS

First your article is organized by article type and for the specific issue it will be considered. Next, our staff will review the list of editorial that has come in for a particular issue and determine what articles are to run and what will be assigned. Once these decisions have been made, you will be notified if we

decide to use your piece. The final process is that the article will be edited by our Copy Editor and then placed in our Catskill Country magazine and on our Web site (CatskillCountry.com). Finally, you will be mailed payment for your article.

We are interested in articles on living and traveling throughout the Catskill Region. Our definition of the Catskill Region consists of the area east of the Hudson River in the New York State Counties that are Delaware, Otsego, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster. Our readers want practical information on places to go and things to do in the Catskill Region. They enjoy articles on events, attractions, unique businesses, landmarks, outdoor life, shopping, antiquing,

LENGTH



Submitted articles should contain body copy from 800 to 2,000 words. Article title, byline and captions are not counted toward the total word count of the article.



FORMAT



Only electronic submissions are accepted. Fancy word-processing layouts only bog down our layout department, as your formatting has to be removed before we can place your work into our page formats, so we ask that you use simple Microsoft Word documents in Times New Roman, only. When you type for publication, there should only be ONE SPACE after the period at the end of a sentence. All quotation marks are to be put on the OUTSIDE of periods and commas. Also, we omit the last comma in a string of characters. (EG: Shoes, socks, shirt and shorts rather than a comma before the and). We know this seems trivial but this saves us a great deal of time.



EDITING



We reserve the right to edit your work if it does not comply with company policies and for the following reasons: typographical, grammatical, and factual errors; clarity, style, length and format.



EXCLUSIVITY



All submitted articles must be the original work of the author. We will not run articles that have run in other local competing publications. Feature articles that we are purchasing first time rights for may not be submitted to other local competitors.



DEADLINES



Articles must be submitted by the 20th of March for the Spring/Summer issue and by the 15th of August for the Fall/Winter issue, unless otherwise specified. If we do not receive your article by the specified deadline it will not be considered. This same deadline applies for reprints. Writers MUST adhere to our guidelines in order to keep our process as structured as possible. We apologize if this creates any inconveniences but, organization is our number one focus.



FEES & PAYMENT



Decker Advertising, Inc. pays 10 cents per word for first publication rights to an article. Article title, byline and captions are not counted toward the total word count of the article. Reprint articles of at least 800 words are paid $40 per article unless otherwise agreed upon. This fee includes the rights to use your article in Catskill Country magazine and for use on our website CatskillCountry.com.
