Because we want you, the writer, to understand the process of our editorial structure we would like to give you some insight on how our process works. First your article is organized by article type and for the specific issue it will be considered. Next, our staff will review the list of editorial that has come in for a particular issue and determine what articles are to run and what will be assigned. All submitted articles must be the original work of the author. We will not run articles that have run in other local competing publications. Feature articles that we are purchasing first time rights for may not be submitted to other local competitors.
DEADLINES
Articles must be submitted by the 20th of March for the Spring/Summer issue and by the 15th of August for the Fall/Winter issue, unless otherwise specified. If we do not receive your article by the specified deadline it will not be considered. This same deadline applies for reprints. Pitched pieces should be offered up well in advance, as we aim to work three months ahead of deadline.
What we pay …
Pay varies by the level of detail required for, and word count of, the assignment. Fees for original articles start at $50 and max out at $125. Writers who work with us for an extended time and writers who work on unusually research-heavy pieces will be paid at the higher end of the scale.
Our standard rate for reprints is $35.
We will ask you to submit a writer’s agreement specifying the negotiated rate. The agreement will also state that the writer retains ownership rights to the piece for future reprint (available after one month). If we decide to even use it, you won't get much money, despite all those long nights you spent trying to figure out the correct proportions of water in the bottles. We want useful articles. It doesn't need to be something complicated. For example a useful but fairly simple article could be made on "How to string a ukulele." Also, let's say that you decide to write on a useful topic such as "how to string a ukulele", but you do such a quick and bad job that really no one would be able to string a ukulele using the article you wrote. If that is the case, you will not get paid much if we decide to use it, despite the usefulness of the chosen topic.
So choose a useful topic, and do a good job on it.

$0-$9: If you send us a blank page, or if it is blatantly obvious you have never touched the instrument you are talking about. If it looks like you didn't spend much time on it, or it isn't really useful. If we can salvage and use anything from your article or if we post it, we will pay you. If we don't use anything, we will not pay you.
$10-$19: If it is a somewhat useful article but looks like you did it really fast, or maybe you didn't use any pictures, etc.
$20-$29: If it is a solid, well written article.

WOW! pays on publication by PayPal or check. When your submission is published, you will receive a “live link” email notification. When you receive the notice, please reply to the email with an invoice that includes your social security number and payment preferences.
*Note: if you opt for payment by check, please understand that it may take up to one month after publication for you to receive your payment. If you opt for PayPal payment, you will be paid within two weeks of publication.
How to Submit:
You may either query or send the completed article in the body of an email. WE DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS. In the subject line you MUST include the words "Submission” or “Query.” Because of the high volume of spam we receive daily, emails that are not clearly addressed with the appropriate subject line may be deleted without being read.
Editorial Response:
WOW! has grown exponentially since its launch September 2006. While we are excited by the incredible interest and wonderful submissions from so many talented freelancers, we have found the need to amend our editorial response procedures.
We receive hundreds of queries every month and can no longer respond to every single query we receive. We will respond to freelancers whose queries show WOW! spirit, knowledge and understanding of our audience, a solid, fleshed-out article or interview idea, and which fit into our editorial calendar.
We have set up an auto-responder to let you know your submission has been received. However, if you do not hear from us, please understand that it is not a disparagement against your writing, it is most likely that your submission does not suit our needs at this time.
Helpful Hints:
Study previous issues and take note of our tone and style. Consider the contents and structure of our various sections: Feature Articles, Feature Interviews, How2, Inspiration, etc. Once you have a feel for what we publish, consider your own expertise and interest.
We are looking for queries that have a fully fleshed-out idea, a rough breakdown of the content of the piece you are proposing, and any sources if applicable. Please also include your bio, writing samples, and any other information or links you feel are appropriate for our consideration.
Do not send an email containing nothing but links. We will not follow them across the web to seek your writing samples. Choose your best and most appropriate sample to include in the body of your email. (Yes, we know it will be a long email.)

Call for Queries/Submissions: Niche Writing
Have you found your niche in the writing world? Or do you know someone who has? We want to hear about it! Our October issue will focus on niche writing. This theme is open to interpretation. As always, our mission is to help and educate other writers, so keep that in mind when you query. We are open to both how-tos and interviews.
Please review our submission guidelines for guidelines and how to submit or query. Pay is $50 - $150 per article, on publication.
We'll also be reviewing past queries/subs to see if they are a fit with the theme.

WOW! welcomes queries and submissions from its readers. Remember each issue focuses on Women, Writing and the monthly Theme.
Columns, Word Counts and Pay Rates:
Twenty Questions: $50
How 2 (1,500 - 2,000 Words): $75
Inspiration (1,500 - 2,000 Words): $75
Feature Interviews (up to 3,000 Words): $75
Feature Articles (up to 3,000 Words): $150
Rights:
We do not accept reprints. If you would like to repurpose a previously published article, please notify us at the time of your query and include the proposed changes that will make it specifically suited to WOW!. Acceptance is not guaranteed and is up to the discretion of the editorial board.
We require First Electronic Rights and the right to archive the article indefinitely. After one month from the date of publication, rights revert back to the author. Although we support you in republishing your article in other online and print publications, we request that you not syndicate your article on sites that provide free content. This practice lowers the value of the piece we have published, and using those sites strips you of your rights to your own article.
