Freelance writing, Good Old Boat, pays $100-$700 per article

Our niche is cruising sailboats from the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s.

We publish articles focused on pride of ownership and articles that discuss upgrades, maintenance, refits, and restoration of good old boats. In addition to these core themes, we publish articles about vendors of good old boat products and services and histories of sailing industry companies and individuals who have influenced the industry.

Because these themes are well-covered by other magazines, we do not publish:

* Destination articles
* Cruising logs
* Racing coverage

What else do we publish? In addition to technical articles, we also welcome articles focused on sailors and their boats, reflections columns, cruising memories, and other features.

Acceptance (or not)

Articles are submitted on speculation. Competition for space in Good Old Boat magazine is brisk. Our responsibility to our readers requires that we try to get the best and most appropriate material. Do not be discouraged if your submission is not accepted. A piece that is not accepted by one publication could easily be just what another publication is looking for. Send articles and photos to Karen Larson, editor, at karen@goodoldboat.com.

Payments For Submissions

$700 Original new technical article (runs 3,000-5,000 words)

$500 Maintenance and upgrade articles and other sailing features (1,500-3,000 words)

$100-300 Other short pieces along these lines

$250 Brief refit articles and photos (running from 1,000-2,000 words)

$500 Boating couple and boat feature with good photos. This can run 1,500-3,000 words. These articles are almost always assigned and seldom purchased as unsolicited manuscripts.

$700 Boat reviews focused on sailing characteristics, layout and design, pros and cons when considering a purchase (possible trouble spots to watch for, and so on). This can run 1,500-3,000 words. These articles are assigned. Unsolicited boat reviews don't work with us.

$100 Reflections. This is a short, philosophical statement. The kind of stuff that comes to us when we've been "out there" a while (runs 350-750 words)

$500-700 History features. We'd also like stories about specific boat types (such as what's gone on with Ericsons over the years), profiles of designers (the career of Carl Alberg or George O'Day and how the individual influenced what we're sailing today) or about other things such as sail shape and materials, hull shapes, keel shapes, etc. (runs 1,500-4,000 words)

$300-500 Good old vendor articles with good photos (1,000-2,500 words). These articles are usually assigned.

$150 Cruising memories (1,500-2,500 words)

$50 Book reviews (375-450 words). Typically, we send reviewers the books. We don't want unsolicited book reviews.
