2011 WRITING COMPETITION
The annual Voices on the Coast writing competition is on again seeking entries from new (previously unpublished) authors with an unpublished manuscript. The story should be aimed at children aged 8-13 years, with the word length up to 30,000 words

Prizes: $1500 first prize and $500 second prize.
A cash portion of the first prize may be used as travel expenses to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, to attend the Voices on the Coast festival on 6 and 7 June 2011 to receive the prize (optional). The total value of the prize will be $1500 including travel expenses and/or cash component
Entries open to all Australian residents.

Background:
Voices on the Coast is a youth literature festival presented annually by Immanuel Lutheran College and the University of the Sunshine Coast, 100 km north of Brisbane. In 2011 the festival will celebrate the 16th year where school students from across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland attend the two day festival to workshop and listen to over 25 Australian authors, illustrators, poets and performers. Young people are stimulated to further develop their own creative writing skills.
This Writing Competition provides an opportunity for an extension of the scope of this Festival to include recognising some of the talented writers in our midst. It has been made possible through the judging support of from Ms Leonie Tyle, Children’s Literature Consultant.
Submission of Entries:
The manuscript should be aimed at an audience of younger readers aged 8 to 13 years.
Entries are open to all previously unpublished writers resident in Australia.
Entries must be the original work of the author submitting the manuscript.
Entries should not have been previously published.
Identifying name details of the entrant should only be on the Entry Form and not on the manuscript to maintain anonymity.
Word Length up to 30,000 words.
Entries should be presented in double-spaced type in typescript no less than 11 pt and printed on one side of A4 paper only. (No staples and no plastic sleeves)
Entries will not be returned. Manuscript entries and entry forms will be destroyed after judging.
A separate Entry Form should accompany each entry.

Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday 15 April 2011.
Acknowledgment of receipt of manuscript will only be made via email address, if supplied.
Definition of an unpublished author:
Definition of a “previously unpublished author” is an author with no commercial publication of a manuscript by a trade publisher or other conventional publisher and excludes successful selfpublishing (more than 500 copies sold).

All entries will be read by judges appointed by Voices on the Coast festival coordinator, and the short listed entries will then by judged by Ms Leonie Tyle, Children’s Literature Consultant. Shortlisted candidates will be advised of their initial selection. (Mid May 2011)
Winners will be advised by telephone on 20 May 2011. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by email before the details are released onto the website. Once the winner and second prize winner are notified, these details will then be placed on the website.
The first prize-winner may decide to use a portion of their cash prize to travel to the Sunshine Coast to be presented with a cheque at the Launch of the 2011 Voices on the Coast Festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Monday 6 June 2011 (6-8.30 pm) and to attend the festival as a guest.
Second prize-winner will receive a cheque via the post.
