Freelance writing, Waterside News, pays $15-$40 per piece

Waterside News, a regional boating newspaper (published monthly), is in need of at least two writers.

Position 1) News reporter

Types of articles to include:

- Fisheries management updates
- Coverage of topics such as changes made by Gray’s Reef Advisory Council, results/impact of mercury testing in local rivers, how the oil spill will affect our coast and the impact of the spill on local water-related businesses, and often, controversial topics such as how development affects our local marshes/coastline.
- Occasional fun pieces as well such as coverage of the Ocean film festival, media day aboard a NOAA research vessel, touring unique/historic vessels visiting local ports, etc.

Requirements:

- Strong research skills, followed closely by strong writing skills
- Ability to distill the often complicated information distributed by government agencies and put it into plain terms that won’t make the general readership use the paper for dog training
- Ability (and time) to write under tight deadlines
- Time and transportation to get out and cover assignments

Position 2) Freelance writer

Types of articles to include:

- Coverage of various local events including fishing tournaments, sailing regattas, and other water-related events in Savannah and Richmond Hill, occasionally further afield in Midway or Brunswick (but rarely).
- Occasional spotlight pieces, profiles, etc. Also occasionally have need for someone to cover articles from a hands-on perspective, such as participating in a tournament, race, or other event.

Requirements:

- Strong grammar, usage and sentence structure skills (flair would be good too!)
- Ability (and time) to write under tight deadlines – there’s always that last minute piece that has to be written
- Dependable and with reliable transportation

The pay stinks - $15 - $20 per piece depending on length for “freelance” pieces, $20 - $40 for news pieces. This is ideal for someone trying to build their clip file and as the paper grows, so will the pay. Boating experience preferred, but not required. MUST be local to the Savannah area - no exceptions.

Published monthly since January 2009, Waterside News has become well-known in the boating community and is a solid resource for anyone who enjoys time on the water.
