During 2011, the Organization of American States (OAS) will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which affirms representative democracy shared by the people of our continent.

With more than 60 years of journalistic coverage connecting the cultures, politics, and societies of the American countries, Américas Magazine, the official publication of the OAS, is conducting this competition “New Ink” (Nuevas Plumas) in honor of the commemoration, according to the following rules.
RULES
1. All citizens of OAS Member countries above the age of 18 may participate by writing an article.
2. The subject of the competition is the development of democracy in the Americas and submissions must relate specifically to the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

4. Each participant may send only one article with no more than 2 authors.
5. The article must not have been previously published.
6. The text must be submitted in Word format and its length should be between 600 and 800 words.
7. The work may be written in any of the four official languages of the OAS: English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese. The winning article will be published in both English and Spanish.
8. The deadline for submission of the articles will be Friday, July 15th, 2011. Winners will be contacted by email before August 1st, 2011, and the results will be published on the Américas Magazine website.
9. The entries should be submitted by email to Americasmagazine@oas.org with the name(s) of the author(s), their general contact data (Passport number, address, telephone number, occupation, and alternate emails, etc.)
10. The top three writers will be awarded by the OAS according to the following format: First Place: Publication of the winning article in Américas Magazine (in English and Spanish) and US$300; Second Place: US$200; and Third Place: US$100. The panel of judges will consist of the editorial board and the director of Américas Magazine, with all decisions being final.
11. Through the act of submission, participants agree to the transfer of copyright of the article to Américas Magazine. Américas may edit, use, translate, and/or publish any submitted article while respecting due credit to the author.
12. All articles may be used in future editions of Américas Magazine or other publications of the OAS.
13. The participants in the contest acknowledge these rules, and any violation of said rules implies the immediate removal of the person and the submission from the competition as well as the prize for which they may have been eligible.
14. Any other undetermined information will be specified ad casum by the panel of judges.
