Free contest, Ronald Asmus Freedom Journalism Contest (on Belarus), top prize: $2,000 (USA)

Applicants for The Ronald D. Asmus Freedom Journalism Contest must be current graduate-level journalism students or recent graduates of the 2010 or 2011 classes. Entries must address in some way the situation of democracy in Belarus. Students may interpret the topic as creatively as they see fit. There are two categories: print and multimedia. All entries must be previously unpublished and original works to the competition.

Entries will be accepted from May 2, 2011, to June 30, 2011. All entries must be postmarked no later than June 30 for consideration.

Complete entries accepted for judging will include:

• Application Form
• Hard copy entry submitted within the technical parameters outlined below

Award:

• One first-place prize of $5,000 and two runner-up prizes of $2,000 will be awarded for both the print and multimedia categories, totaling six winners.
• Winners will also receive travel expenses from their home in the United States to Washington, DC, for the award ceremony at the Embassy of Poland.
• The winning and runners-up entries will be published by the German Marshall Fund.

Print Requirements:

• All pieces of the application should be labeled with the entrant’s full name.
• All entries must be original works between 1400 and 1600 words, typed 12pt Times New Roman Font, with 1-inch margins.

Judging:

A panel of five distinguished judges from the print journalism field will evaluate the long-form written submissions. A separate panel of five multimedia experts will evaluate the multimedia entries. The winners will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity, relevance, and depth. In the event of a substantial number of entries, the organizers reserve the right to present the judges with a narrowed pool of semi-finalists.

Timeline:

• All entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2011.
• Winners will be notified by the end of August 2011.
• The award ceremony will take place September 2011.

Entries will not be returned and become the property of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
