Deadline: 3 June 2011
Michelle Lang’s journalism probed politicians, highlighted injustices, explored solutions to health care problems and told the stories of ordinary Canadians in extraordinary circumstances. The Michelle Lang Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a student of any discipline to apply his or her passion for writing and interest in current events to a full year of reporting in two of Canada’s busiest newsrooms.

Who is Eligible?
Michelle Lang held a Bachelor of Arts in English so this fellowship is not limited to students who are studying journalism.
The criteria for selection are:
* A commitment to journalism and a love of storytelling through the written word
* Academic excellence
* Strong writing and communication skills
* A desire to effect change through journalism (Either through public service, advocacy journalism or commitment to a specific social cause)
* An ability to work well with colleagues
* A natural curiosity and desire to learn about people and events, particularly those of international importance
* Basic reporting skills
* Participation in university or community activities
* Bilingualism, in French or other languages, is considered an asset but is not required
* Previous daily newspaper experience is an asset but is not mandatory
* Successful candidates must have a valid driver’s license.
Goal of the Fellowship
To offer a year’s worth of reporting and writing experience to an individual who has expressed a desire to launch a career in journalism and has a record of academic excellence. At the Calgary Herald, the fellow will hone skills at a major metro daily. At Postmedia News there will be opportunities to work on stories of national interest. Both newsrooms will provide a welcoming, collaborative experience in which to learn and be inspired.
