Freelance writing, news/ political publication, pays $125-$150 per story (Washington, DC)

We are a 50-year old publishing company near Washington, DC, in need of a talented, experienced freelancer to help us with one of our most popular online publications. This contract freelance position requires self-discipline, initiative and the ability to produce high-quality news copy on short deadlines. The perfect candidate for this job will be capable of reporting on a range of topics important to older Americans. Duties include: covering relative congressional hearings on Capitol Hill; closely following and reporting on aging-related initiatives at the local, state and federal levels; staying abreast of major legal cases affecting older Americans; tracking grants and other funding mechanisms benefiting our target audience; and electronically filing news stories throughout the week.

If you're a self-starter who can produce error-free copy that sings, we want to hear from you. Send us a cover letter, a resume and no more than three recent samples of your work. Because we anticipate a large response to this ad, all applicants should be prepared to compete for this position. We intend to make our selection based upon a competitive process in which a few chosen candidates will be invited to write a 200- to 300-word news story on a topic to be determined by our editors. And yes, if we use your story, we'll pay you for it ($125-$150) -- regardless of whether we select you for this position.
