Free to enter, QUT Postgraduate Creative Writing Prize, prize: $2,000 (Australia)

Deadline: 12 August 2011

From 2011 QUT’s Postgraduate Creative Writing Prize will be open to all postgraduate Creative Writing students in Australia.

Entries may be in the form of a short story, creative non-fiction, a literary or professional writing essay, or poetry. Submissions are limited to 3000 words of prose, or 50 lines of poetry.

The postgraduate prize is open to current postgraduate students (and Honours students), enrolled in a Creative Writing course degree in any Australian university.

A panel of judges shortlist the entries. The winner will be announced at the end-of-year Queensland Writing Gala (date and venue to be announced). In addition to the $2000 awarded to the winner, Highly Commended certificates will be awarded to all shortlisted candidates. The prize winner will be published in the annual QUT Creative Writing and Literary Studies anthology, Rex.

Conditions of Entry

These conditions must be strictly observed. Entries which do not follow the guidelines or are submitted later than the deadline are not eligible for the Prize.

Students may submit only one entry. Work is to be original and unpublished, and must not have received an award in any other competition. Work that has been accepted for publication but has not appeared in print by the time of the contest deadline may, however, be entered. No student may re-enter if he or she has previously won the Prize.

Entry Procedures

Entries must be typed, double-spaced on one side only of A4 white paper, with pages numbered and the title on each page. Four copies of each entry must be submitted.

To ensure anonymity, your name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript. On three copies, please attach a cover sheet with the title of the entry and the word count. On the fourth copy please attach these details, together with your name, university, name of the degree you are enrolled in and contact details (telephone, email and postal address).

No changes may be made to an entry once it has been submitted. Students are advised to proofread their work very carefully.

Send entries to: QUT Postgraduate Writing Prize, Creative Writing and Literary Studies, Faculty of Creative Industries, K Block, Victoria Park Road, Kelvin Grove 4069. If you have any questions about this process please contact the administration desk on 3138 5466 or at creatwrit@qut.edu.au.

Manuscripts will be destroyed after the competition, so please keep a copy. No submissions will be returned.

The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Closing date for 2011: Friday, August 12, at 5pm.
