The creative writing department at Interlochen Arts Academy is now accepting applications for the Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Competition. Any student in grades 8 through 11 during the 2010-11 academic year is eligible and encouraged to apply.

The creative writing scholarship competition is held every other year and this year’s grand prize is a $30,000 scholarship to the Creative Writing program at Interlochen Arts Academy during the 2011-2012 school year and publication in the 2012 “Interlochen Review.”

Entries to this year’s competition must be submitted online by midnight on December 15, 2010. Students must submit both poetry and prose pieces. Click here for official submission guidelines and directions.

The creative writing program at Interlochen Center for the Arts was founded in 1975 with a major grant from the Ford Foundation. Classes are capped at twelve students, tutorials are readily available and notable guest writers visit throughout the year. Students study poetry, fiction, non-fiction, screenwriting and playwriting in a supportive environment of fellow writers and published authors. Student publications include personal chapbooks, the quarterly “Red Wheelbarrow” magazine and the annual “Interlochen Review.”

Interlochen Arts Academy is a fine arts boarding high school that attracts exceptionally talented and motivated students from nearly every state and more than 20 other countries to study creative writing, music, dance, visual arts, theatre, motion picture arts and college-preparatory academics.
