Thank you for your interest in writing about voluntourism. While Dog’s Eye View Media currently has no book projects pending for outside authors, this blog is always looking for fresh posts. We don’t pay a lot (yet), but previously published materials are welcome. If you have a story about volunteer travel you would like to share with our readers please review the following guidelines.
Rights: Feel free to recycle previously published material on our blog, just be sure you still own all the rights. Dog’s Eye View Media buys one-time rights only for blog posts, so your article content remains yours and may be resold elsewhere.
Word count: Articles of 300 – 900 words are strongly preferred. Exceptions may be made for exceptional material.
Subject: All submissions must deal with a positive look at voluntourism. You may contribute essays about the volunteer experience, stories on the history of a nonprofit and how volunteers became a part of their programs, profiles of voluntourism operators, features about a serial volunteer, advice, reviews of voluntourism guidebooks/merchandise, etc. Think outside the box. Never shy away from humor or even satire.
The Don’t List: Don’t sell a trip, merchandise… or pretend you are not a representative of a company if you are (That includes you A.I.). If you are with a business, just say so. Write something about how you grew into your job from being a volunteer or perhaps create an interesting piece about the trials and tribulations of establishing a volunteer program. Is there a volunteer that amazed you? What is the story? Again, think outside the box. Our readers would love to learn about programs from the inside. Just be upfront and be creative!
Don’t tirade against some aspect of the industry, such as paid placements, certain project types… Our stand is that voluntourism has something for everyone and for every style of traveler. Focus on what can be done. Pick an educational, informative topic and stay focused. Blog posts are short. Avoid rants and going off topic.
Also, no trite “How to Pack” or “How to get a Passport” submissions will be accepted. Let’s leave those to the thousand of guides out there who need page fill. In addition, try not to be too sweet or write in the style of those ‘county musings from grandma’s back porch’ books. Travelers have spines. It’s okay to lay it all out there as long as you are not nauseatingly over-cool.
Pay: Pay for blog posts is $25 per article. Payments to authors are made to PayPal accounts only, – prior to publication and within 30 days of acceptance and receipt of your PayPal account details. As travelers this allows us to pay you from anywhere in the world we are working. If an author does not have a PayPal account, they may opt to receive a $25 online gift certificate for Kiva, or animlal lovers may choose to have a $25 donation be made to Care for Dogs, Thailand in heir names. For additional benefits see below for information on author bios, charity links…
Submissions: Please only submit one article per email and make sure your work is reasonably edited. You may submit up to 3 articles per month maximum. Allow up to 30 days for a reply to your submission. (They usually come much faster, unless our team is all traveling.)
Photos: We currently do not have a budget for photos used on our blog. If you have a photo you feel tells the story well and you wish to include it with your post at no additional payment, attach it with your submission in a low resolution format suitable for websites.
Author Bios: You may attach a bio of up to 75 words to your article to be posted at the end of your post. Your bio may contain up to two links to your websites or to other ‘legitimate’ resources. Links will be check to verify that they do not lead to spam, MLMs or other nefarious sites.
Where to? After reading all of the above guidelines, you may email submissions to: kathys@dogseyeviewmedia.com
