Paying market, Barge Journal, pays $10 plus $40-100 for Editor's Choice

Barge Journal accepts submissions via email at BARGEJOURNAL[AT]GMAIL[DOT]COM.

Email as a single file attachment up to 15 pages of work in any genre or no genre or any combination, transmutation, or permutation thereof. Send .doc, .rtf, .pdf formats only, please.

MAKE SURE your subject line reads: “SUBMISSION, (author's name), (#of pages)or we may not read it.

Include a brief cover letter as the body of the email with your contact info and title(s) of the work you are submitting. Feel free to include a bio, notes on the work, pictures of dirty apartments, or anything else that may amuse us (though these are not required and will hold no bearing on our reading.) You will also automatically be added to our mailing list unless you decline in the cover letter.

We do not recycle.

We may consider translations with the consent of the original author, but please query first; all other submissions please do not query.

We accept only original, previously unpublished material, no reprints; we do not consider something posted to your personal blog, myspace, or facebook as previously published. Please do not submit more material until you have heard back from us about the first. Simultaneous submissions are fine, so long as you let us know if it is published elsewhere. Multiple submissions also fine.

Guidelines are generally the same for art (cover letter, etc.) Response time for the print version may not be until we make our final cuts on the issue, but we are in the immediate market for some work to make our web home feel more homey and less webby.

For the web, $10 payment per artist on publication. Send 5 or 6 pieces as separate .jpg or .tiff attachments. 700dpi or higher res.

All submissions are read by humans, who will let you know as quickly as we can whether or not your work is being passed along for final review and do our best to give you a personal response.
If you see a picture of a cute puppy or kitten, it is a consolation for our declination of your work.
If you see a picture of a gross apartment, welcome to Barge.

If you see a picture of former Allegheny County Coroner Cyril Wecht, he is judging you silently.
If you do not receive our initial response within 2 weeks, feel free to resubmit. Responses for pieces under final consideration may take between 1 and 4 months. The bread will give it to you. If you want it.

For all accepted work, Barge Journal and Press purchases first North American rights. All work is also considered for featured inclusion on our website as an upcoming issue preview.

Payment is in 1 contributor copy, with two Editor's Choice prizes ($50-100 and $40-80, according to funds) awarded per issue. Authors featured on our website will receive a token payment of $10.
