Submission guidelines for 2011 Nelson Algren Short Story Award
Stories must be fictional, unpublished, under 10,000 words and received by midnight (Central time) Feb. 15, 2011.

First prize: $5,000. Three finalist prizes: $1,500 each.
How to Enter: Mail story with your name, address, telephone number and email address to Chicago Tribune, Nelson Algren Prizes, 435 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 or E-mail submissions as an attachment to printersrow@tribune.com. Online entries must be sent and received during the Contest period; mail-in entries must be postmarked by the end of the Contest Period and received within seven days of the end of the Contest Period. Each Story must be double-spaced, written in English, not previously published, and less than 10,000 words. The contestant's name shall appear on an attached cover page, but must not appear on subsequent pages of the story. Stories must be fictional. Limit two entries per person. Sponsor's clock shall be the official clock of the Contest.
Eligibility: This Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States or DC ages eighteen years and older at the time of entry. Employees (and the employees' immediate family members living in the same household) of the Sponsor and its advertising companies, parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, promotion and delivery contractors and/or public relations companies, are not eligible to participate. THIS CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.
Selection of Winners and Notification: Entrants agree that all decisions made by the panel of judges relating to any and all issues related to this Contest are final and binding. Sponsor will attempt to notify the potential winners by telephone or by email using the information provided in the entry form. If a winner cannot be contacted or does not respond within 72 hours of the first attempt to make contact, if a winner does not fulfill the eligibility requirements, if a winner does not adhere to the Official Rules, or if the prize notification is returned as undeliverable, that winner will be disqualified and Sponsor will select a new potential winner by the same criteria set forth above. All winners will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability Release and a Publicity Release. Failure to return all such documents set forth herein within ten days of the date Sponsor sends them to winner will result in the winner being disqualified and another winner may be selected from remaining eligible entries, based on the criteria set forth above.
PRIZES: One Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000. Three Runners Up will each receive $1,500. Total value of all prizes: $9,500. Prizes are not transferable, and prize substitution will not be allowed, except at the discretion of the Sponsor. All winners are responsible for applicable federal, state and local taxes, where applicable, in connection with the prize. All properly claimed prizes will be awarded, but in no event will Sponsor award more prizes than are provided for in these Official Rules. Limit one per prize person.
