From Dumfries to Dundee, Glasgow to Aberdeen and everywhere in between, we are looking for Scottish children's novels with a difference.
Fantastic fantasies, awesome adventures, and sensational sci-fi - the Kelpies range of Scottish children's novels has them all. But we are still looking for more. Do you have a cracking story, with strong characters and believable dialogue which children won't be able to put down? Then we want to read it!
The Kelpies Prize was set up in 2004 to encourage and reward new Scottish writing for children. Winning authors receive a £2,000 cash prize and have their novel published in the Kelpies range. For more detail, please read the Guidelines below.
The closing date for entries for the 2011 Prize is 28 February 2011. If you would like to submit a manuscript, please read the following Guidelines, and Terms & Conditions, carefully. When you submit your manuscript, you must also include an Application Form.
The Kelpies Prize is open to all ages, professions and nationalities (except employees of Floris Books).
AUTHOR GUIDELINES - what the judges are looking for
1. Manuscripts must be set wholly, or mainly, in Scotland.
2. Manuscripts should incorporate subject matter to which today’s children can relate.
3. Manuscripts should be suitable for children aged roughly between eight and twelve years old.
4. The judges are looking primarily for a cracking story with strong characters, believable dialogue and compelling atmosphere which will engage the target readership (see above).
5. Please bear in mind that stories with animals as the main characters are, on the whole, more suitable for a younger age-group than the Kelpies Prize.
6. Equally, stories with strong romantic themes are, on the whole, more suitable for an older age-group than the Kelpies Prize.
7. All entries must be primarily in English. Vernaculars are accepted, but authors should bear in the mind the language abilities of the children for whom the book is written.
8. Manuscripts must be 40,000-70,000 words in length.
9. Manuscripts should be typed in a 12-point font and double-spaced (but can be printed on both sides of the page). Page numbers should be included on every page.
