Freelance writing, Beta Mag, topics: journey/ places, pays $0.50 per word

Our aim is to publish the best English-language travel writing on the planet.

By "travel writing" we mean non-fiction storytelling or essays that somehow involve or consider motion, journey, and/or place. But we love the idea that you might help us see the genre in a new way.

By "best" we mean stuff that's real, that we've never seen before of thought about - stuff that's fresh and raw and irreverent, smart and engaging, honed to draw blood. Ultimately, we'll need it to play to one of our themes (see editorial calendar), and/or fit in one of our departments, but don't get too literal about it. We may see connections you don't. You may even inspire us to make up a whole new department.

* Please no simultaneous submissions, or stuff that's been published elsewhere (even on your own blog), or stuff that isn't yours to sell. Multiple submissions might be okay, in theory, but please consider how it might be best to focus on one thing at a time - and to make it the absolute best thing you've got. This ain't the lottery!

How long and how much

We can do from 5 to 3,500 words long (and maybe even longer if it grabs us by the neck and hangs on all the way to the end). But here's the bottom line: writing that makes the cut will be paid for by the word, at competitive print rates (probably at 50 cents, for now). So every word has to be worth at least a pair of quarters.
