Matador’s award-winning writing and photography begins with our worldwide community of contributors.
MATADOR CONTRIBUTORS come from all over and with all different backgrounds. We have 30-year media veterans, and students on their first travels abroad. We have novelists, diplomats, landscapers, professors, adventure athletes, linguists, and stay-at-home moms. Since the beginning, we’ve never really cared about contributors’ publication records or ‘status’ as bloggers, or anything else really. What matters to us are stories. Stories transparently told. Stories that occur at ground level.
MatadorU
Writers, photographers, and journalists just starting their progressions are strongly encouraged to investigate MatadorU. Launched in September of 2009, the U is a formalized training program in writing, photography and new media, with a strong emphasis on storytelling. It grew out of the tradition established early on at Matador of taking as much time as needed (and far more than traditional publications) working with and encouraging contributors to get stories just right. Many of our students’ pieces end up getting published at Matador, and several graduates have gone on to join Matador’s editorial team.
Submission Info
Matador Network includes 12 content-specific blogs. Potential contributors are expected to be familiar with the style and content of any blog they’re pitching work to. Publishing feature articles is competitive. Pitches from prospective contributors should show thorough research as to what, if anything, has already been published on the subject, as well as hook us with sample paragraphs.
In general, we’re looking for stories that evince a deep knowledge of place, details and information that would only be known by someone who has lived or spent considerable time there.
Read The Following Before Submitting
1. Familiarize yourself with the 12 blogs that comprise the Network – Read the blog overview.
2. Avoid covering the same topics – Use the search box on the homepage of Matador to review the existing content on the Network. Unless you have an amazing new angle on a topic we’ve already examined, offer something fresh.
3. Publishing rights – Read our full Publishing & Author’s Rights.
4. Payment - All authors receive $25 per article, payable via PayPal, upon publication. At present, this fee is non-negotiable.
5. Pseudonyms- We do not publish work by writers who request a pseudonym.
Sending In Your Draft
1. Write an original draft that does not exceed 2,000 words.
Do not send an article that has already been published somewhere else, including any work that has been published as a blog.
2. Check your spelling, punctuation, grammar, and — important — facts. Submissions sent with numerous errors are unprofessional and will not be considered for publication.
3. Submissions received without all the accompanying information requested on the submission form will not be considered.
4. Do not include photos in your submission. If you have photos you’d like the editors to consider, please include a link to an online photo album in your draft. The same applies for photographers interested in submitting materials for a photo essay.
