Freelance writing, BootsnAll, topic: travel, pays $50 per feature article

BootsnAll Feature Articles

BootsnAll.com is seeking feature articles related to travel, which appeal to a wide audience (rather than an audience specific to people researching one destination). Articles can certainly be about one specific destination, as long as the theme or topic might interest a broad group of people. Large and famous cities and places do have some potential if your angle is really unique and attention-getting, but lesser-known places just don’t have a large enough audience on our site.

The topic needs to be broad, but it also needs to not be so broad that there’s no way you can do any more than skim the surface, or that the information has been covered everywhere else already.

For example:

○ Five Places in Italy to Visit in Fall with Kids is way too narrow of a topic, but 9 Off the Beaten Path Spots to Visit in Greece will work
○ Budget Travel in Europe is far too broad, but Eating Well on a Budget in Europe is narrow enough to be manageable

Photos

Accompanying photos are required for each photos. They don’t need to be your own though, and often photos from Flickr Creative Commons or another Creative Commons source are often better quality and compliment the article better, so don’t feel compelled to use your own if they aren’t the best. For most “list” articles, we need a photo for each list item, and that photo has to help tell the same story the text is telling. Gathering photos is often more difficult than you’d expect, so it’s a good idea to confirm that usable photos are available before an idea is pitched, or at least before writing begins. We can give you more information on this process once you’ve contacted us with an idea.

And don’t forget to check the BootsnAll Editorial Calendar regularly to see if there are any topics coming up that fit within your areas of expertise or interest.

Feature Article Requirements & Rights Information

* Word Count: 1200-1600 words is preferred, though the word count will actually relate more to the topic of the article and to the number of points covered within it. We will generally accept anything from 1200-2800.
* Pay: $50 upon publication.
* Photos: One big, beautiful, eye-catching photo (that tells the same story as the text) is required for each item on your list. The photos don’t have to be yours - they just need to be Creative Commons licensed.
* Publication Rights: We are only interested in articles that aren’t yet published, and BootsnAll owns all future rights to the paid pieces you publish through us. If you prefer to maintain future rights, please submit your article through our unpaid articles program.

BootsnAll Photo Feature Articles

BootsnAll.com is seeking photo feature articles which use pictures to illustrate a common theme. For these, some text is still required, but it can often be much less than with a regular Feature Article.

We are open to any ideas. As long as the article has wide potential, we’d love to hear the idea. Generally speaking, an article that focuses on only one destination won’t work for this program. Large and famous cities and places do have some potential if your angle is really unique and attention-getting, but lesser-known places just don’t have a large enough audience on our site.

Topics also need to be those with don’t require a lot of explanation, but can rather rely more on the photos to tell the story.

For example:

○ The 12 Most Amazing Pools in the World is an ideal photo feature. It’s really all about the pictures; there’s not much you can say about the pools with words that the photo can’t.
○ 10 Things to Do in Istanbul isn’t ideal for a photo feature as the photos won’t convey as much without plenty of solid text info to back it up.

Obviously, for a photo feature, choosing the right photos is of the utmost importance. We suggest that before you even pitch the idea, you begin research photos to make sure they are available. They don’t need to be your own though, and often photos from Flickr Creative Commons or another Creative Commons source are often better quality and compliment the article better, so don’t feel compelled to use your own if they aren’t the best. We need one photo for each item on the list, and that photo needs to be the kind of jaw-dropping photo that you see and think “I need to show this to my friends!”

Photo Feature Article Requirements & Rights Information

* Word Count: For a photo feature, word count takes a backseat, but generally you’ll need to include 50-100 words of text description/information for each photo.
* Pay: $30 for any published article.
* Photos: One big, beautiful, eye-catching photo is required for each item on your list.

BootsnAll Travel Essays

A travel essay can be a narrative or a rant or an opinion or an observation - or just about anything else along these lines. For example, an article called “Why Twitter is an overrated travel tool” would be a great conversation-starter as long as it was authentic and well written. We certainly don’t intend to start arguments for the sake of starting arguments, but if you have a contrarian opinion then we’d consider paying you for an essay on the subject.

We’re also looking for the kind of articles that make you think - whether it’s an essay about why we always associate the word “paradise” with beaches, or a story about being reminded what an amazing thing it is to fly when your seatmate reveals they’ve never been on a plane before.

“Travel Essays” should have an interesting subject and title that could potentially appeal to a broad travel audience (rather than a tiny niche), and at their best they should be good conversation starters or something that could get people thinking (and, by extension, passing it around to their friends!).

Travel Essay Requirements & Rights Information

* Word Count: 600 words minimum, no hard maximum (though under 2500-3000 words is preferred)
* Photos: - At least 3-4 photos (that tell the same story as the text) are required.
* Pay: $20 to $40 per article, based on potential and complexity.
* Publication Rights: We are only interested in articles that aren’t yet published, and BootsnAll owns all future rights to the paid pieces you publish through us. If you prefer to maintain future rights, please submit your article through our unpaid articles program.

Help for New Travel Writers

Travel writing sounds like a wonderful job, and in many ways it is. Because of this, there is limitless competition for paying jobs, and unfortunately, there is also huge competition among the publishers and companies, so pay tends to be modest.

For some perspective on how things really work, we recommend reading Tim Leffel’s article discussing the Seven Myths of Being a Travel Writer. In addition to being helpful about how the industry works, it contains several tips that will help you figure out the sort of articles that we are looking for, as well as information that helps clarify what we can’t use.
