2011 Summer Institutes in Literary Studies

Seminar Leader: Christopher Ricks, William M. and Sara B. Warren Professor of the Humanities and Co-Director of the Editorial Institute, Boston University

From June 26 to July 1, 2011, the National Humanities Center will offer two innovative seminars on literary understanding. Open to scholars who have received a Ph.D. within the last ten years and who teach in departments of literature or other relevant disciplines at colleges or universities in the United States, the seminars will concentrate on the detailed operations of literary texts. Each seminar will include only fourteen participants.

The National Humanities Center will cover the cost of travel, lodging, meals, and texts. Participants will receive a stipend of $1,500. Applications must be postmarked by March 11, 2011.

DATES AND LOCATION

June 26–July 1, 2011, at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

ELIGIBILITY

The Summer Institutes in Literary Studies are open to scholars who received a Ph.D. within the last ten years and who teach in departments of literature or other relevant disciplines at colleges or universities in the United States.

STIPENDS AND EXPENSES

Participation in an institute carries a stipend of $1,500. The National Humanities Center will cover the cost of travel, lodging, meals, and texts.

FORMAT

Each institute will combine extensive seminar discussion with small group work and individual consultation with the seminar leader.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The seminar will be held at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Participants will stay in a hotel in Chapel Hill, near the University of North Carolina. The Center will provide daily bus service to and from the seminar.
