THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY CRIME COLLECTIONDark Prints Press is going to start their crime/mystery imprint with a bang, a short story collection titled ‘The One That Got Away'. This is your chance to have your work appear alongside top authors such as US crime master Lawrence Block (full list of commissioned contributors to be revealed later in 2011).
Here's the idea for the collection:
Too often our crime-solving heroes do just that – solve crimes. But what about the ones who get away – the grifters who con and don't get caught, the criminals who play cat-and-mouse games with the law only to disappear into the unknown? What goes through their minds, or the minds of their victims and pursuers? What legends do they leave behind, both inspirational and terrifying?
There are multiple angles from which to tackle your story. It could be through the eyes of a detective who just isn't going to solve a case, someone victimised or likewise affected by a crime/criminal (showing what results from their trauma), or through the eyes of an anti-hero who is untouchable by the law. These are of course simply a few suggestions – as with the horror anthology, I am looking for those raw, emotion-charged stories that shine a unique light on how humans interact with each other. There is no set time/era for the story, nor a location – have fun with that. And although this is dark crime, I do enjoy a touch of well-timed dark humour.
We are looking for short fiction between 5000 and 10 000 words. If you have work outside this area, please contact via the address below to discuss. Dark Prints Press will be publishing a print and eBook version of this collection. Accepted contributors will be paid a flat fee of AUD$75 per story, and will also receive a contributor's print copy. Any profit made from the collection will be used to launch a solid crime/mystery/suspense series (novels, novellas, and short story collections).
Please read the above submission dates - anything received before this time will be deemed to have been taken out of your dusty drawer and sent straight to us, and we will just place it in a dusty bin. Response times are approximately 6 weeks. All decisions for non-commissioned writers will be finalised by 1 June 2011, when editing officially begins.
