SURVIVING THE END HORROR COLLECTIONDark Prints Press is going to start their horror/thriller imprint with a bang, a short story collection titled ‘Surviving the End'. This is your chance to have your work appear alongside top authors such Jonathan Maberry, Jason Nahrung, Shane Jiraiya Cummings, Martin Livings, Joseph D'Lacey, and many more (full list of commissioned contributors to be revealed later in 2011).
Here's the idea for the collection:
Imagine the world has ended, that all but a small portion of Earth's population has been wiped out. You have never had time to find out why. Your energy is spent on surviving – skewed weather patterns, crumbling buildings, starving creatures, and humans mercilessly hunting their own kind. You left the confines of your home long ago, alone, searching for remaining shreds of humanity. Then, one day, you finally stumble upon a small group of survivors who wish you no harm. They have something to share with you. Something to help you survive. Stories, modern fables, of how to avoid the nightmares you hadn't even considered. These stories and more, from across the world, are collected within these pages, told by survivors just like you, to help with ‘Surviving the End'.
The character mentioned above will appear in the collection as a framing device for the stories within. You are to take the view of another, similar character, or a group of characters, and present one of the unconsidered nightmares faced during survival. We are hoping the collection will grow into Brothers Grimm-style tales set in a post-apocalyptic world, a world that may be closer than we think. There are no defined rules as to how the world was thrown into chaos, or what resulted in the process – each storytelling group can speculate in their tale, and each country/area may be experiencing the fallout quite differently. The emphasis is on human survival, or lack of – raw stories that capture our darkest fears will be highly sought after, as will stories that take human interaction to unexpected levels.
We are looking for short fiction between 5000 and 10 000 words. If you have work outside this area, please contact via the address below to discuss. Dark Prints Press will be publishing a print and eBook version of this collection. Accepted contributors will be paid a flat fee of AUD$75 per story, and will also receive a contributor's print copy. Any profit made from the collection will be used to launch a solid horror and thriller series (novels, novellas, and short story collections).
Please read the above submission dates - anything received before this time will be deemed to have been taken out of your dusty drawer and sent straight to us, and we will just place it in a dusty bin. Response times are approximately 6 weeks. All decisions for non-commissioned writers will be finalised by 1 June 2011, when editing officially begins.
