Freelance writing, Linked (internet/ technology magazine), pays $0.10 per word

Linked Magazine is the premier resource for Internet professionals focusing on hosted services, software as a service, web application development and new media.

Unlike other publications covering technical subjects which focus heavily on enterprise technology, Linked Magazine content is written for professionals in the Internet industry. Every article and review will cover subjects from the perspective of professionals who provide Internet-based services. Most of the content is written by freelance writers who are independent experts. If you're such an expert and are interested in making a submission, the following guidelines will explain the entire process for you.

As you review these guidelines, please keep the following important points in mind:

* To avoid conflicts of interest, we very rarely accept vendor-bylined submissions. However, we will review all submissions on a case-by-case basis.

* We do not accept "canned" submissions written on generic subjects for a generic audience. All submissions must be written specifically for Linked Magazine.

* All submissions must be original (never before published in any form) as well as exclusive.

* If you are making a submission on behalf of the author, please note that we will need to work with the author directly during editorial production.

* Linked Magazine routinely purchases all rights to published stories, meaning we reserve the right to reprint, republish, or post articles online. However, we do not deny authors the permission to repurpose their own work unnecessarily, provided we receive a written request.

* Linked Magazine reserves the right to reject an article at any time, even after it's been initially accepted.

* Publication lead time is approximately 3 months. For example, manuscripts received in January will publish in a March issue.

Linked Magazine and Its Readers

Linked Magazine is a controlled subscription publication, with print editions distributed worldwide to approximately 15,000 readers 12 times per year. Most of these readers work within (or are consultants serving the needs of) Internet-based service providers, whether as business leaders (CEOs, line-of-business managers, business analysts) or senior IT managers (CIOs, VPs of MIS, IT directors, senior IT analysts).

Our readers are educated, technically astute, and experienced. They use Linked Magazine to help them navigate the dynamic Internet industry.

To help them make good business decisions, key purchasing decisions and important decisions on technology implementation, Linked Magazine readers require strategic but technically-rich information about these technologies in an Internet services context.

Author Qualifications

We welcome proposals from qualified authors. You're considered qualified if:

* You have at least three years of field experience.

* You have a working knowledge of theories and techniques beyond your own personal experience.

* You can communicate effectively in written English.

* You can meet deadlines and follow through on assigned topics.

* You are willing to accept criticism and are comfortable with the idea of editorial professionals helping you improve your work.

* You are not accepting payment from a third party for writing the article (without our prior approval).

* You have a desire to share your personal experiences and expertise with other professionals.

Article Types

In general, five kinds of feature articles appear in Linked Magazine:

* Case studies might focus on how your shop has implemented a new information systems strategy, focusing on the challenges and advantages of the new environment. Interesting applications or interesting solutions to knotty problems are particularly desirable.

* Industry analysis articles focus on the implications of recent news or technology developments. For example, what is the significance of a vendor's recently announced commitment to a particular standard?

* Explanations of technology should describe new, different, or difficult solutions, taking care to cover why this technology is important to our readers.

* Business view stories should describe how Internet-related services companies can enhance their sales and marketing or other business-related issues

* Product reviews take an in-depth look at hot new products as well as at established products. New product reviews should include information received from beta testers as well as first-hand information. Reviews of established products (generally products that have been available for about a year) should pay attention to integration and implementation issues and how the product fits into the big picture; reviewers should speak to current users of the product and explain how these users worked the bugs out.

Core Topics

We also accept proposal submissions for core topics that are relevant to our readers.

Submitting Your Idea

* Prepare an abstract, outline, or summary of your proposed article idea (maximum one page) and send it to the Editor. The abstract must include a brief bio about the author. Be sure to include your email address, phone and fax numbers, and your mailing address.

* You're free to send in a completed manuscript. However, we receive a number of unsolicited manuscripts and proposals, and they take time to review. It may take us up to six weeks to accept or reject such an article. Please do not submit your proposal to any other publications while it is under review.

* If your abstract is approved, we will contact you, set a tentative publication date, and determine a deadline for delivery of the manuscript. Keep in mind, however, that publishing schedules can change quickly.

* In most cases, accepted manuscripts will be scheduled for publication within a 3-issue window.

Article Specifications

If your article proposal has been accepted, it's time for you to start writing! Feature article length is 2,000 words, with a maximum of 4 figures, tables, or screenshots (include captions). No need to worry about providing publication-quality figures; our production department will re-build your originals from scratch.

If your product review proposal has been accepted, we'll arrange to have a Product Review Guide and an evaluation copy sent to you. Product reviews should be a maximum of 2,000 words in length, with no more than 3 figures, tables, or screenshots.

If for any reason you are unable to meet your deadline, you must contact us as soon as possible. If you miss your deadline without informing us beforehand, your article will be withdrawn from the publication schedule and may not be published at all.

Author Payments

* Linked Magazine offers payment for the acquisition of publication rights; typically authors will receive $0.10 per word.

* Payment is processed upon publication (not manuscript acceptance).

* You will receive an author contract when your article is scheduled for publication. This contract must be signed and returned before we can process a payment.
