Free contest, ZineWest 2011 Writing Contest, top prize: $100 (western Australia)

We are seeking short original works by new/emerging (i) writers sixteen years and older who live, work, study or attend a writers’ group in Western Sydney (ii) prose, poetry, lyrics, cartoon, drama – any word-based art we can print ZineWest is an annual, illustrated A5 zine which offers print publication to around 30 writers.

The print zine is launched Sept/Oct with readings and prizes. Other entrants may be invited to read at ZW Word, an open mic event where prizes are decided on the day. ZineWest is a not-forprofit project run by New Writers’ Group inc with the help of our co-sponsor and writers’ groups.

ZineWest ‘11 - Guidelines

AIM: Provide publication for new Western Sydney writers in multi-genre annual zine plus prizes.

ENTRIES: Must be original, unpublished work of entrant and not won a prize elsewhere. If using snail mail send copies only, keep your originals!

ELIGIBILITY: “New” (i) writers 16 years and over who live, work or study in Western Sydney(ii) or attend a Western Sydney writers’ group.

Entry Fee: None. Price of zines: approx $8 each.

PRIZES: First = $400; Second and Third = Books from Giramondo.“Best Poem” and “Best Prose” plus judge’s nominations and editor’s awards.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES: up to 3 for each writer

GENRE: Word-based works we can print - stories, memoir, poems, lyrics, drama, comics, cartoons…

FINALISTS: Editors select 30 entries to publish in ZW11. Works may receive an edit and be illustrated.

JUDGING: Finalists’ (unedited) entries are forwarded to judge. Decisions of editors and the judge are final.

ENTRY FORM: All entries must be accompanied by a completed form.

SIZE LIMIT:
  • Poems/Comic = Two A5 pages, (2cm margins)
  • Prose/Drama = Three A5 pages (2cm margins)
  • Poetry Guide: 60 lines including line breaks – Note that long lines might take two lines on an A5 page.
  • Prose Guide: 800 words for narrative; less for drama/ conversational piece.
TITLE & WRITER’s name: All entries must have a title but the writer’s name must not appear anywhere on the entries – names on entry forms only please.

Illustrations of entries: Optional but welcome. Send as separate documents (email/jpeg ideal).

FORMAT: No decorative fonts or imagery on written entries accepted (cartoons exempt!). If emailing, attach as Windows Word docs only.

FONT: Arial 12 or equivalent

LINES: Single spacing

SENTENCES: One space only between sentences.

PARAGRAPHS: Indent (no empty lines)

DIALOGUE: ‘Lyrebird said, “My song will win ZineWest,” but she’s a plagiarist,’ said Robin.

CHECK: Spelling, syntax, facts, legal aspects

CO-SPONSOR: The Writing and Society Research Group, UWS, co-sponsors prizes and nominates the judge. Mars Hill Café 331 Church St Parramatta provides free venue for workshops and meetings.

(i) Writers whose work has not been professionally published other than in multi-author anthologies, journals and self-publication.

(ii) Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board’s list of councils: Auburn, Bankstown, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, Holroyd, Liverpool, Parramatta, Penrith and Wollondilly.
