Amateur* Australian-based writers are invited to submit a 1000 word story about an Australian beer journey. There is wide latitude in what the story can be about. It can be a descriptive feature about a beer trail, about a beer region, or about a personal beer journey. It can be story about a figurative beer journey of discovery or even a trip to the pub. Writers can tackle the topic from any angle; it just needs to be about beer in Australia with travel as a central theme. Entries will be judged on how they celebrate the positive enjoyment of beer. Stories promoting irresponsible consumption of alcohol will not be considered.
Conditions of entry:
1. The winner will be decided by a panel of judges including Australian Brews News Editor Matthew Kirkegaard, publisher Tilo Grieco, CraftyPint publisher James Smith and Critic’s Choice Editor-at-large Pete Mitcham.
2. The judge’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
3. Prize: The winner will receive a cash prize of AU$500 and will be published in the 2011 edition of the Beer Lovers Guide to Australia. Runners up will be published on Australian Brews News.
4. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted. All entries must be certified as the original and unpublished work of the entrant and not previously won a competition or award. You confirm that the work entered does not infringe the rights of any third party.
5. Entries must be marked Beer Lovers Guide competition and be emailed to
matt@beermatt.com by 5pm, Friday 3 June 2011.
6. Entries must be in standard manuscript format (typed with double spacing in Times New Roman 12pt font).
7. Entries must include the following information:

e. The following statement: “In entering the 2011 Beer Lovers Guide to Australia writing competition, I [insert name] acknowledge that I have read and understood the Terms of Entry and that I have understood and accept the Terms of Entry. I agree that my name may be published.”
8. Stories to be published will be proof-read by an editor prior to publishing. Minor editing may occur to correct grammar or punctuation and for style.
9. Copyright remains the property of the writer, but entrants agree to grant Scribal Publishing and Cuneiform Pty Ltd an ongoing licence to publish their entry in the Beer Lover’s Guide to Australia and on Australian Brews News (www.brewsnews.com.au). The work may be used in whole or part to promote for promotion purposes.
10. Shortlisted entrants will be advised of the results no later than Friday 10 June, 2011. Payment of the prize will be made 30 days after the announcement of the winning entry.
*The purpose of this competition is to provide new beer writers the opportunity to be published. For the purposes of this competition ‘amateur beer writer’ means a writer who has not had work published for payment in an established print magazine or journal. Where this condition is not met but a writer feels they should be considered amateur the writer can make a submission as to why they should be considered an amateur writer for the purpose of this. Acceptance or not of this submission is at the sole discretion of the judges, whose decision is final.
