Catalyst is a regional business magazine which aims to supplement the local business journal with in-depth stories on trends and developments on the area business scene.
We are looking to re-focus the format, placing more of an emphasis on young professionals. Frequency is every two months, with page count usually at 32 pages, sometimes 40 or 48. The goal would be to take it beyond that.
This is a part-time contract position, in which the editor works closely with the publisher on the annual editorial calendar and on the content / direction of the magazine.
The editor writes the feature story each issue, as well as the short & departmental pieces, and assigns several of the stories to freelance writers. Some content may also be picked up from national sources, and then localized. Must have a great eye for detail, perfect grammar skills, a sense of urgency regarding deadlines, and flexibility when last minute ads are sold.
Must be willing to work with the publisher on finding ways to grow the magazine and make it more successful. Must be willing to write "business closeup" pieces that are paid editorial (clearly marked, of course), and to develop special sections, including special advertising sections, that can be used to generate revenue. We have several signature yearly features, such as our 20 Under 40 issue (which is the next issue), our annual Business Awards issue, our Women in Business Leadership issue, etc. These are excellent ways to create buzz and advertising sales.
We are a small company so the editor must be able to creatively stretch our resources and still produce a fine magazine, utilizing photographers (largely on trade) and local experts in their fields for some of the content.
Although the pay is not large, the magazine is an excellent addition to one's portfolio, and possible stepping-stone to bigger positions in other companies or within ours.
Pay depends on page count. When at 32 pages it is $1000 per issue, at 40 pages it is $1250 per issue, at 48 pages it is $1500 per issue, and so on. Editor can make additional pay each issue as writer of additional stories. However, if the pay is the primary reason for applying, this may not be the gig for you. Time estimate needed is about 40 hours per issue, must be willing to visit our office regularly, and to occasionally attend sales meetings so that the sales reps can get to know you and the vision for the magazine. Bozzi Media is a fun place to work!
To apply, please send a resume and at least two samples of published work to vince@spokanecda.com. Looking to fill the position immediately. Finally, the applicant must love a challenge, must love the written word, and must love magazines!
