If you are a local freelancer who was laid off or took a buyout from a newspaper where you often found yourself frustrated with increasing pressure to churn out quantities of stories over stories of quality, Patch is right for you. If you are a newspaper reporter who spent the last few years loving the work but hating the job, then Patch is right for you. Good freelancers can find enough work to help pay the rent, and they can also work at a pace that gives them the freedom to do justice to stories meriting extra time and energy.
Patch.com, a network of online community news sites owned by AOL, is looking for freelance reporters, columnists and bloggers in Orange County to help cover community news including city government, schools, crime, courts, and features on almost any topic under the sun as long is it relates to the communities of Seal Beach, Leisure World, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor (good freelancers may also find work in neighboring Patch communities such as Long Beach, Fountain Valley, most of South Orange County, and Los Angeles County).
For freelance reporters, the work is consistent, diverse and challenging. We pay roughly $50 to $100 per article, and stories sometimes gain national and international exposure when picked up by Patch’s sister publications such as Huffington Post and AOL.com.
This is a job for experienced, autonomous journalists with the know-how to tackle complex city government and schools topics and write in ways that resonate with readers. It’s also a job for those who love feature-writing and narrative story telling.
Applicants should have at least two years of professional reporting experience, and a passion for journalism.
Patch is also looking for columnists who have expertise in their field as well as writing experience. In particular, Patch is on the hunt for a good medical writer.
Finally, Patch is looking for bloggers. This is an unpaid position reserved for people who are passionate about a specific topic or their community and are looking for a platform to share their thoughts and experiences with the world. We're looking for bloggers with personality and the ability to riff on topics in a way that engages readers. Bloggers can be foodies writing about food or sports know-it alls/fans writing about the Angels or the Ducks or the Lakers.
