The Western Edition is a neighborhood newspaper in San Francisco with an established readership among local communities. We are seeking writers who are self-motivated and detail-oriented to perform interviews and write monthly stories for our publication.
Qualifications:
1. Can easily communicate ideas in writing, with college English level of proficiency in grammar and punctuation usage.
2. Basic interviewing skills that would be sufficient to gather facts and details for story background.
3. Ability to write news stories of 800 to 1,000 words in accordance with AP style.
4. Highly self-motivated and able to complete assignments in a timely manner according to editorial guidelines.
5. Flexibility to meet rush deadlines on occasion.
Many of our stories concern philanthropy and nonprofit organizations, and we would prefer that you have an interest in these as well. However, a good sense of humor and ability to be a team player would be equally strong assets.
This is a contract position offering an opportunity to build a strong portfolio of news articles about important happenings in key areas of San Francisco. You will have a chance to develop your skills in the newsgathering business while building a professional portfolio.
Payment is $35 per story and $50 for special event stories.
Telecommuting is ok.
