Games is a magazine offering ten issues a year of visual and verbal puzzles, quizzes, game reviews, contests, and feature articles. Our readers tend to be young adults (average age: 34), although the age range is very wide; and both sexes are represented about equally. What all our readers share is the joy of exercising their minds in new and playful ways.
Our feature articles can cover almost any subject, from game- or puzzle-related events or people, to mystery, wordplay, humor, and human ingenuity in all its guises. For example, past features have included the magic of Penn and Teller, garden mazes, scavenger hunts, practical jokes, miniature golf, ingenious art forgeries, England’s Dangerous Sports Club, the making of Jeopardy!, and wild and crazy swimming pools.
We prefer queries for articles, but will consider completed manuscripts (typewritten or computer-set) of 2,000 to 2,500 words. Accompanying photographs are welcome but not necessary—we can do photo research or assign illustrations as needed. Payment for accepted manuscripts typically ranges from $500 to $1,000 for all rights to the work and is based on the subject, length of the piece, and difficulty of the assignment.
Puzzles, tests, quizzes, and other doable features may be of any length from 1/12 of a page to a two-page spread. We look for fresh, lively ideas, carefully worked out for solvability. Visual appeal, a sense of humor, and the incorporation of pictures/objects from popular culture and everyday life are big pluses. Novelty is essential. For visual puzzles, all you need to submit are rough drawings or written descriptions of photos/pictures; we can assign finished art or photography, as needed. Payment varies.
GAMES also accepts contributions of original two-player games, contests, and Fake Advertisements. Contributors should check the magazine for style. Game reviews are done on assignment only.
