New publishing house, Rickshaw Publishing, seeks fiction novels of any genre

Submissions Policy

We, as a publishing house, are very unusual in that we accept unsolicited submissions. We welcome manuscripts from writers and ask that anyone sending work through to us follow some very simple guidelines.

Rickshaw Publishing currently seek fiction novels of any genre aimed at any age group. Novels submitted to us do not necessarily have to be completed: we are happy to hear from any writers with “Works In Progress” as well as those who have full drafts available.

Please ensure that initial submissions include:

* a detailed synopsis of what happens in the novel
* a writing sample of the first three chapters or 10,000 words (whichever is shorter)
* a little bit of information about you.

Submissions should be sent to Jo at submissions@rickshawpublishing.co.uk. For initial contact, only submissions received by email will be accepted. This is part of our green policy: any submissions received by post will not be read.

If we believe that your work has potential, we will ask to see a full manuscript, which we will require to be sent to us both via email and post.

How we work

Rickshaw Publishing is a new company aiming to bring a fresh approach to the publishing industry, which we feel is excluding some new talent and being slow to create innovate marketing and publicity ideas.

The principle difference between Rickshaw and other publishing companies is that we are reviewing submissions for potential rather than simply whether they are already at a publishable standard.

Where we believe we have found such potential, we work alongside the author to provide guidance that will maximise the chance of success and produce a finished work in a timely manner. In most cases we look to provide assistance at the re-drafting stage, but in some cases we do look at projects that are currently being completed.

We do not charge any fees at all for the editorial assistance we provide. Our income will come purely from publishing the finished book.

The reasoning behind this approach is that it takes a wide range of skills to produce a publishable novel. These include writing ability, plotting, character development etc, but also the ability to identify/consider the qualities that will result in sales, such as identification of the potential audience and marketability.

Currently, agents and publishers seem to expect finished manuscripts that excel in all of these areas. We believe that it is unreasonable to expect writers, especially new writers, to be able to do this, and that this approach is excluding from the publishing process significant potential that simply requires assistance in one or two areas. We aim to find this potential, provide the assistance required, and publish the work.
