SparkPeople, Inc. is a leading online preventive health company. Our goal is to help as many people as possible reach their goals and lead meaningful lives. All of our programs and services are medically sound, completely free of charge, community-based and accessible. In the areas of health, fitness, nutrition, weight loss and goal-setting, we help people discover what will truly motivate them to reach their goals.
Our members are trying to make permanent lifestyle changes by incorporating diet and exercise to lose weight, improve health, reduce stress, and increase energy. SparkPeople provides the information and encouragement that members need to make these goals a reality.
SparkPeople publishes a weekly e-newsletter with only three feature articles, so we have to be selective in choosing writers and articles that best fit our mission and help our members.

Tone & Style
SparkPeople articles are written by experts or well-researched writers. They should appeal to our average member, who is adapting a healthy lifestyle change and/or trying to lose weight. The voice of SparkPeople is helpful, encouraging, entertaining, easy to follow and/or relatable. Generally, articles are between 800 and 1,800 words in length.
Categories
SparkPeople articles generally fall into one of four broad categories (Nutrition, Fitness, Motivation, and Wellness), and then within a sub-category. To see the articles we have in each section of the site, use the following links.
* Nutrition: Covers eating away from home, healthy eating habits, meals and food choices, buzz-worthy research, nutrition pitfalls and plateaus, quick and easy tips, seasonal and holiday tips, and special concerns.
* Fitness: Exercise basics for beginners, family and lifestyle, fitness equipment how-to's, focuses on specific techniques or equipment, special concerns, tips to overcome plateaus, seasonal and holiday ideas, and specialty workouts.
* Motivation: Goal-setting techniques and tools, motivational stories about others, staying motivated, picking yourself back up, and seasonal tips.
* Wellness: Emotional health, mind and body, rest and relaxation, stress relief, weight maintenance, and healthy lifestyles.
Freelancing Opportunities
The vast majority of SparkPeople's content is created by our in-house staff of fitness and nutrition experts, but we do occasionally hire freelance writers who specialize in health topics related to nutrition, fitness and weight loss.
If we do not offer you a writing project, please understand that the decision is multifaceted, not a negative judgment of your skills. Each week, we receive numerous queries from people who want to contribute content to SparkPeople. We produce a limited number of articles each week, and therefore, can only assign a small number of articles. As a free site, we try to keep our costs as low as possible. Freelancers are typically paid between $25 and $100 per piece, based on experience, credentials and writing ability, and are required to carry their own professional liability insurance.
