Writer’s guidelines for Upstream

Upstream is a biannual journal focusing on the Mohawk Valley of New York state, however, some room is allocated in each issue for national and international articles. Upstream focuses on the past, present and future of the valley. For our purposes, the Mohawk Valley includes the following eight counties: Albany, Fulton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Saratoga, Schenectady and Schoharie.

What Upstream is looking for

Upstream is looking for well thought out and carefully crafted articles and essays of 800-2000 words on all aspects of life in the valley. (Query us if you want to submit something longer than 2000 words). Opinion and personal essays are accepted. We also publish book, film and theatre reviews. We do accept some articles and essays that have appeared elsewhere. Currently, we do not publish fiction, however, we publish a few poems in each issue. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.

Payment

Upstream pays a minimum of $25 for first time rights for original, unpublished articles, essays and reviews. We do not pay for poetry or material previously published elsewhere. Payment is made upon publication.

Writing tips

Avoid writing about things that have been heavily covered unless you have new information or a new angle. Some examples of the above are the Erie Canal, Proctor’s Theatre and horse racing in Saratoga.

Your reader will for be an intelligent adult. Don’t talk down to him or her.

Avoid academese, unnecessary foreign replacements for English words and hackneyed phrases.

Your article, essay or review should make people think and/or feel. It should educate and stimulate.

Steer a middle course between scholars writing for other scholars and popular journalism.

Submission of an article, essay, poem or review or any other material by email, regular mail or any other method constitutes acceptance by the author of the above guidelines. Upstream is not responsible for lost mail or lost emails.
