Freelance writing, direct-mailed newspaper (Keepsake Communications), pays $25 per article (Detroit)

Keepsake Communications, a new publisher of direct-mailed community newspapers, is looking for talented freelance writers and columnists for a variety of projects. In the coming months, Keepsake Communications will roll out new direct-mailed monthly and weekly newspapers, direct-mailed commemorative annual newspapers that tout the unique virtues of their communities and topical publications that will cater to niche readers. This is a print-based enterprise that is committed to old-school editorial quality and integrity. Publications will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service to every home and every business in our home markets. There will be a Web presence but it will be minimal. We want writers who are driven by the discerning use of words to tell a story in a traditional newspaper format, as opposed to Web sites' quick-churn, shovel-it-in mentality, which erodes quality in execution and accuracy at the expense of immediacy. Our demand is to do it right; getting it right is not a goal ... it is something we expect to achieve with every issue of every publication. We're good on the editing front right now but will accept inquiries from qualified people for future opportunities. We will add staff writers as we grow and will build that roster from among the strongest freelancers we're fortunate enough to find. Unlike the slew of craigslist ads that ask you as a writer to write for nothing to build a clip file, we're not going to ask you to work for free.

Our rates are modest at $25/story for now but will triple for people who stay with us as we grow. People with newspaper experience will be considered immediately. Student newspaper writers also are welcome to apply. Soon we'll be seeking freelance photographers. Don't overwhelm us with clips or links; just send an email or text describing why you might want to be a part of this project, which has been under way for two weeks now. We've assigned or accepted ideas for 25% of the editorial space for the first edition of our first paper, the Center Line Courant. So far all of our writers are highly experienced professionals. If we like you, we'll come up with a 500- to 1,500-word tryout story that you will be paid for. Please, no phone calls, but I will take texts at (248) 747-1550 and emails. Hawke Fracassa is my name. I am the editor. I can't wait to hear from you.
