Free contest, IHDP International Writing Contest on "Green Economy", top prize: $500

The IHDP Secretariat (UNU-IHDP) is pleased to announce its first scientific writing contest for a new magazine to be launched in late fall 2011.
The contest is open to young scholars from all over the world (graduate students, PhD students or postdocs). Scholars from developing countries are particularly encouraged to take part. The Secretariat will select five winners to be awarded a cash prize - and will publish their work in its magazine’s first issue.
Articles should address a significant scientific topic relating to the human dimensions of the 'Green Economy'. While the subject matter may be technical, contestants should seek to write an article that is understandable to a non-scientific audience.

Young Economist of the Year Essay Contest, top prize: £1,000

The Society launched their Young Economist of the Year competition in 2007, in association with tutor2u. This prestigious essay writing competition invites students currently studying for A Levels and the International Baccalaureate in all subjects to write on a major current problem or topic of concern. The winner of the Young Economist of the Year wins £1,000, with runners-up each receiving £500.
Students are invited to write an essay of between 1,000 to 2,000 words, on a subject set by the President of the Royal Economic Society, calling on key elements of their A Level or International Baccalaureate courses, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion. Each year's topic for the essay title will be set in the Spring term and advertised through Tutor2U and the RES website.

WTO launches essay award for young economists
The WTO launched on 15 February the “2011 Essay Award for Young Economists”. The Award aims to promote high-quality research on the WTO and WTO-related issues among young economists and to reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community.
Prize
The annual WTO Essay Award consists of a prize of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay. In the case of a co-authored paper, the prize will be equally divided among the authors. The winning paper will be officially announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), which is currently the largest conference specializing in international trade. The award ceremony will take place in September 2011 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The winning author(s) will receive funding to attend the meeting.
Selection
An Academic Selection Panel is responsible for the selection of the winning paper. The Panel comprises:
* Professor Avinash Dixit (Princeton University)
* Professor Robert Staiger (Stanford University)
* Professor Alberto Trejos (INCAE Business School).
Ex officio panel members will include Dr Patrick Low (Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO Secretariat) and Dr Hakim Ben Hammouda (Director, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, WTO Secretariat).
Dr Michele Ruta (Economist, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO) coordinates the work of the Selection Panel.
Eligibility
The paper must address issues related to the economics of the WTO. Possible topics include the effects and design of trade agreements, contingent protection, trade facilitation, Aid for Trade, the economic aspects of dispute settlement, regional versus multilateral integration, trade agreements and the environment. The author(s) of the paper must possess or be engaged in the completion of a PhD degree and, if over 30 years of age, be no more than two years past a PhD defence. In the case of co-authored papers, this requirement shall apply to all authors. In addition, to be considered for the Award, essays cannot exceed 15,000 words.
Past winners
* The 2010 WTO Prize was awarded to Dave Donaldson (MIT) and Olena Ivus (Queen's University).
* The 2009 WTO Prize was awarded to Ralph Ossa (University of Chicago). The runner-up was Mostafa Beshkar (University of New Hampshire).
Important deadlines
Essays must be submitted by 3 June 2011. The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat will shortlist eligible papers by 17 June 2011 and the Selection Panel will take a final decision by 15 July 2011. Only the author(s) of short-listed essays will be notified.
Publication

The Atlas Economic Research Foundation is proud to sponsor an essay contest for students, young faculty, and policy writers who are concerned about the cause of Sound Money.
Prizes:
The overall winner of the Essay Contest will receive a cash prize of $2000.
Two additional prizes of $1000 each will be given to outstanding essays written by junior faculty, graduate students, or policy writers in the US.
Two additional prizes of $1,000 each will be given to outstanding essays written by foreign-based students, junior faculty, or policy writers. (special category).

Description:
In its second year, Atlas is holding an essay contest in order to raise awareness and promote knowledge about sound money, and to identify young talents whose keen understanding of this subject will, hopefully, steer the direction of monetary policy toward sound free-market principles. The contest is open to junior faculty, policy writers, graduate and undergraduate students in the US and abroad. While all essays must be written in English, there will be a separate category for foreign contestants whose English is not their first language. Two winners from this category will be chosen. Participants in the essay contest must address one of the Essay Topics listed above (or a combination of them). Essays will be judged on the basis of clarity of writing and quality of thought. Judges will be looking for thoughtful essays that reveal that the writer has considered the benefits of free economies. Please read this entire page, including the sections on Eligibility and Essay Guidelines, before submitting your paper.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, you must be 35 years old or younger, a junior faculty member or a student of a fully-accredited university, or a policy writer connected to a think tank or a policy institute.
Essay Guidelines:
Essays must be written in English.
Essay must have a cover page with the essay’s title and the name of the author.
Essay must be at least 1500 words but no more than 8000 words.
Essay must be an original work written by the submitter and must not have been previously published elsewhere.
Atlas prefers a writing style which is accessible to the educated laymen, but rigorous enough as to be used in college and university courses.
Atlas prefers well-researched papers with references and footnotes that back up assertions, but we note that our judges are not looking for the paper with the most footnotes.
Winning essays will become the property of Atlas and may be published in print or electronically.
Submitting Your Essay:
Email your completed essay, in Word document, as an attachment to SoundMoneyProject@AtlasNetwork.org on or before January 15, 2011. In your email, you must include your name, mailing address, and the think tank, university or school that you wish to list as affiliation.
