Calypso Cards publishes sophisticated and innovative greeting cards and other products.
We work with a handful of ghost writers who provide fresh original copy. Our artists provide artwork after the text has been selected.

We are currently looking for submissions for our Selfish Kitty line. This line has a loyal following and is contemporary, clever and edgy, although never mean, cruel or degrading. The outside text is usually innocent and the inside has an unexpected twist. Please keep the card sender, recipient and occasion in mind when writing. Selfish Kitty buyers tend to be college-educated, college-town or urban dwellers, women and men aged between 20 and 50. We are looking for submissions for the following occasions: Birthday, Anniversary, Friendship/Love/Thinking of You, Get Well, Sorry, New Baby, Thank You, Belated Birthday, New Home, Congratulations, Wedding, Retirement, with particular emphasis on Birthday, Anniversary and Friendship. We also publish other products such as refrigerator magnets.

Calypso Cards pays a flat fee of $50.00 for full copyright on complete, well-written card copy (both inside and outside text) with no editing necessary. After work is accepted for publication, a writer must sign a Calypso Cards Rights Agreement.

Editorial Aim and Policy

Contemporary Verse 2 is a quarterly literary journal that publishes poetry and critical writing about poetry, including interviews, articles, essays, and reviews. It is our policy to publish new writing by both emerging and established poets. The writing we encourage reflects a diversity representing a range of social and cultural experience along with literary excellence.

Note: Unsolicited submissions must be of previously unpublished work and we do not consider simultaneous submissions for publication. CV2 purchases first world serial rights only. Authors retain full copyright for works published in CV2.

Length of Submissions

• Poetry submissions should include no more than 4-6 poems.
• Interviews should be not more than 6-8 pages in length, double-spaced.
• Articles should be no more than 3-4 pages, double-spaced.
• Essays should be no more than 2-4 pages, double-spaced.
• Reviews should be 600-1000 words, double-spaced. (Between ½ and 2 pages long.)

Note: All submissions should be printed on one side of letter-sized paper only. If possible, submissions of critical writing including articles, essays, interviews, and reviews should include a word count, either on the title page or in your covering letter. Authors of critical writing should be prepared for editorial suggestions regarding length, tone, and format.

Each submission should include:

• A short cover letter with your name, address, phone/fax, and email, if possible.
• A short (three-line) biographical statement for editorial purposes.
• Your name and address at the top of each page of your submission.
• A self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). Submissions from outside Canada require international reply coupons or Canadian postage. Foreign postage, including US stamps, is unacceptable in Canada.

Please note that all email submissions must follow the same format as regular submissions: include a covering letter (see above) and include your name on every page of submitted poems. Please send your submission as a single attachment of a Microsoft Word or RTF (rich text format) document. If this is not an option, you may paste your submission into the body of your email, as long as it still follows our submission guidelines.

Please note: Any email submissions that do not follow correct guidelines or do not include full contact information will not be considered for publication and will not receive a reply. Please read the regular submission guidelines before sending us your work.

CV2 offers the opportunity of email submission to Canadian contributor poets because we understand the cost of sending submissions by regular mail can be hard on those on limited incomes. However, the review time required to consider email submissions is the same as for those that come by regular post – anywhere from 2 to 6 months. We ask that you please be patient with our editorial process, which is designed to ensure that all submissions are considered with the same care. Also note that CV2 does not accept simultaneous submissions sent to us by any method. We will reject outright all simultaneous submissions.

Note: Because of publication deadlines, our questions concerning editing often require a quick turnaround, meaning publication of your work could be jeopardized or delayed if you do not provide accurate contact information.

• Essays: $40-$150, depending upon length
• Reviews: $20-$75, depending upon length

Note: Writers whose work is selected for publication receive 2 complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears. This is in addition to payment.

Suitability for Publication

We suggest that writers research literary journals carefully before submitting their work to determine that the journal’s aesthetics match that of their writing. Because of the number of submissions we receive, we are unable to provide individual feedback to everyone who requests it. If you are a new writer, we recommend seeking consultation from an experienced writer. For manuscript consultation services and programs, contact your local or provincial writing organization for assistance.

Freelance writing, Milwaukee Magazine, pays $700-$200 for feature stories

WHO WE ARE

1. Milwaukee Magazine is a monthly magazine covering the people, issues and places of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Total circulation is about 40,000; total readership (according to the respected Media Audit) is more than 220,000.

2. Get to know our publication by reading it. Some stories are archived on our Web site. Sample copies of the magazine may be bought on newsstands throughout the area ($3) or requested by mail ($6). One-year subscriptions are $19.

WHAT WE WANT

1. We are interested in timely stories about current issues, local personalities, area business, sports, healthcare, education, politics, arts and culture, architecture and urban life, history, food, shopping, music and nightlife, recreation and the environment. We are particularly looking for writers who can deliver brightly written, well-researched service articles but are also interested in investigative stories from qualified reporters. Full-length feature stories run 2,500-5,000 words; if your query leads to an assignment, we'll specify what length we're looking for. We pay $700-$2,000.

2. We are also in the market for two-page "breaker" stories, which are often short on copy (less than 1,500 words) and long on visuals.

3. Stories for our front-of-book Insider section range from expos�s to amusing slices of local life to interesting people profiles. We're looking for stories you won't find in other local publications and unconventional angles on the current scene. Freelance writers often begin their association with Milwaukee Magazine here. These stories usually run no more than 650 words and pay $50-$225. Query Assistant Editor Evan Solochek. Mini-reviews for our Reviews page are assigned by Senior Editor Ann Christenson. Mini-reviews run no longer than 125 words and pay $50.

WHAT WE DON'T WANT

1. We focus very closely on Milwaukee and the surrounding area. We are simply not in the market for articles that are not about the people, places and issues of our region. Nor are we much interested in stories about former Milwaukeeans or national subjects that touch our region only tangentially.

2. We are not in the market for fiction, personal reminiscences or poetry.

3. Many of our columns are written by regular contributors, but occasionally we publish freelance submissions.

HOW TO PITCH US

1. Your best bet is to query with samples of your previously published work. Tell us why your idea is right for our magazine and why you're the one to write it.

2. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for our reply. We cannot respond to queries and manuscripts not accompanied by return postage. Please allow four to six weeks for a response. You can also e-mail us with a pitch, clips, etc.

THE DETAILS

* For all stories, Milwaukee Magazine buys first rights and pays on publication, unless otherwise indicated. Pre-approved out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed with proper documentation.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

1. When contacting sources, you may state that "I'm writing an article for Milwaukee Magazine" if the article has been specifically assigned, in writing, by an editor of Milwaukee Magazine. You may not represent yourself as anything other than an independent contractor on assignment for Milwaukee Magazine.

2. If you or a close relative or friend are related in any way (e.g., board memberships, employment, volunteer work) to a story you wish to work on, this relationship must be disclosed to the editor prior to accepting the assignment.

3. Under no circumstances are writers allowed to accept gifts, gratuities, free tickets or other special privileges in connection with an assignment for Milwaukee Magazine.

Freelance writing, Northwest Michigan Second Wave, topic: features/ local stories - Michigan, pays $150 per story

At Northwest Michigan Second Wave, we want innovative and new ideas and stories, not just those that everyone has heard about time and time again. We cover the entire Northwest portion of Michigan's lower peninsula, and we're looking for freelance feature writers.

The stories have to be 700-800 words in length and the compensation is $150. You don't have to take photos, just arrange for our photographer to be able to take some. You just need to write the feature, a small bio for the end of your story and a 50-word abstract. Simple, hey?
