Freelance writing, Italian America Magazine, pays $100-$250 per article
Who Are We? Italian America is the most widely read magazine in the U.S. for Italian Americans. It is a quarterly magazine, published by the Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA), the nation's largest and oldest organization for people of Italian heritage.
Most of the magazine is written in-house with the exception of two to four feature-length articles in each issue. We invite freelance writers to submit queries for these features.
What Do We Want? We look for stories about Italian Americans, their history, culture, contributions and issues that do not run in the mainstream magazines.
* Tightly written stories with character, drama and impact. We look for accurate facts, dates and statistics where relevant.

Free to enter, Italian American Writers' Book Publication Poetry Prize, prize: $1,000/ publication

The prize, consisting of book publication in bilingual edition by Bordighera, Inc., is dedicated to finding the best manuscripts of poetry in English by an American poet of Italian descent and surname or middle maiden surname, to be translated upon selection by the judges into quality translations of modern Italian, for the benefit of American poets of Italian ancestry and the preservation of the Italian language. Each winning manuscript will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000 to the winning poet and $1,000 for a commisioned translator. The poet must be a U.S. Citizen, but the translator may be an Italian native speaker, not necessarily a U.S. citizen. The poet may translate his/her own work if bilingually qualified. Submission may be made in English or bilingually with English followed by Italian mss.
The poet must submit 2 COPIES of 10 sample pages of poetry in English on any theme. Quality poetry in any style is sought. Universal themes are welcome. The final book manuscript length should not exceed 48 pages since, including translations, the published, bilingual book will be 96 pages in length. To give the translator time to complete the work, the entire winning manuscript will not be due for at least 6 months after selection of the winner.
The 10 sample pages of poems in English should be on white 8 1/2 by ll standard paper, clearly typed and photocopied and submitted in duplicate mss. (Single-spaced except between stanzas with no more than one poem to a page, though a poem may run on to more than one page.) Be sure to label all pages with titles of poems and number them from 1 to 10. The applicant's name should NOT appear on any poetry pages. Staple the ten anonymous sample pages securely together and attach one cover page to the front of each of 2 duplicate mss. with name, address, telephone, e-mail if applicable, of the author, plus a biographical note. The remainder of the ms. must be anonymous. Poems may have appeared in magazines, anthologies or chapbooks. Include acknowledgements at the bottom of the cover page only.
If poems have already been translated into modern Italian, submission of a bilingual sample is encouraged making a 20 page sample with a translation page following each English page. Include name and biographical note of translator on the 2 cover pages. NO GRAPHICS. The authors of the book Digital Heretics and the International Journalism Festival invite entries for the second edition of the Digital Heretics Journalism Award.
The award invites entries of online investigative journalism incorporating video, audio, text, photographs, animation (or a mix of these) which make innovative use of the internet (crowdsourcing, collaborative journalism, mash-ups, web 2.0, etc). The winner will be chosen on the basis of the originality, the level of documentation and the depth of the work presented.
Requirements
The work must be in Italian or English, the work must have been published online in the period from 01 January 2010 to 15 February 2011, the author(s) must be under the age of 35 at the time of publication.
How to participate
Send an email to heretics@journalismfestival.com by 28 February 2011 with the following: name and surname, date of birth, nationality, academic qualifications (if any) of the author(s), contact details of the author(s) (full postal address, email address and telephone number), Url of the work, title and brief summary of the work (max 1800 characters).
Participation in the award implies full acceptance of the rules. Work submitted which does not follow the rules will be rejected without the requirement on the part of the award organisers to inform the candidate. Each candidate can submit only one entry. All entries (plus all other relevant information set out above) must be sent to the email address indicated above. All other entries will be automatically excluded. The unmotivated absence on the part of the winner at the awards ceremony will result in the withdrawal of the award. The candidates absolve the jury from any responsibility deriving from the work presented for the award, including the violation of copyright and plagiarism. Entries and associated documentation will not be returned to the candidates. All candidates accept that the work submitted can be published in the media provided the publication is in association with the award. In accordance with Italian law 196 of 30 June 2003 and successive modifications, the data of the candidates will be used exclusively in relation to the award and can be disseminated for promotional use in relation to the award.

The first prize is 5,000 euros (gross) with two prizes of 2,500 euros (gross) each to be given to other work of particular merit. The short-list of award finalists will be published on 31 March 2011. The awards ceremony will take place during the V edition of the International

The award committee has the responsibility of overseeing the procedural aspects of the award. The committee has no influence on the selection of the short-list or the winners. Selection of the winners remains the exclusive responsibility of the award jury.

Free contest, Posara Prize International Creative Writing Competition: A Foreigner in Italy, prize: £1000

We love Italy and we've set up The Posara Prize to encourage fine writing about the country. It's a creative writing competition open to everyone.
We're looking for original, unpublished pieces of no more than 2,000 words, with the underlying theme of 'A Foreigner in Italy'. The work can be fiction or non-fiction: the important thing is to capture the emotion of Italy, as seen through an outsider's eyes.
You can write about the people, the countryside, art, architecture, food and wine – in fact, anything that makes Italy interesting, inspiring, exasperating or even frightening.
The winner will receive a prize of £1,000.
How it works
Entries should be made using the entry form below, and must be received no later than midnight on Monday 28 February 2011.
No more than one entry per person is allowed.
From all the entries a shortlist of 10 will be drawn up by Lois and Bill Breckon, and Elizabeth Garrett. The shortlist will be announced on the mill website on Monday 21 March 2011.
The winning entry will be will be selected by a panel of judges comprising best-selling authors Jessica Hart, Sharon Kendrick and Anita Burgh. All have been creative-writing tutors at the watermill. Between them they have had more than 150 books published.
The winner will be announced on Tuesday 5 April 2011.

The Perugia and Terni Chambers of Commerce have set up the second edition of Stories on Umbria journalism award. The competition is addressed to articles and TV programmes covering issues of artisticcultural-environmental highlights and high-quality economic system of the region, improving Umbria visibility both in Italy and worldwide.
Rules
1. Participation in the competition is free and implies full acceptance of the rules.
2. The competition is divided into three sections:
Traditional press articles: photo-journalistic articles published in 2010 in Italy or abroad; Television: TV reports broadcasted in 2010 in Italy or abroad; Web articles: web articles published in the net in 2010.
3. Articles and programmes can be sent also as the result of a team work. Each author can submit only two pieces of work.
4. Works must be sent to the Organizing Secretariat of the Competition not later than March 13, 2011: Chamber of Commerce of Perugia, Press and Communication Office, Via Cacciatori delle Alpi, 42 - 06121 Perugia - Italy, email: urp@pg.camcom.it. Participation is reserved to articles published in newspapers or magazines in 2010. Works must be sent together with a copy of the newspaper or magazine in which they were published (also in PDF format if sent by email). Articles in foreign languages must be translated into Italian or English.
6. TV - Prize of € 2.500,00.
Participation is reserved to services broadcasted in 2010 on national television or satellite tv. Works must be sent in DVD or mini DVD cam. A brief synopsis in Italian or in English must be submitted; television services in foreign languages must be subtitled in Italian or in English.
7. Web - Prize of € 1.500,00.
Participation is reserved to articles published on the web in 2010. Articles in foreign languages must be translated into Italian or English.
8. The works will be selected by the jury panel.
9. Works will be examinated by the following general criteria:
- Originality of the subjects
- Richness of information
- Ability to match territory and enterprise issues.
10. The Jury Panel will select the best contribution in each category. The awarding of the prizes will take place in Perugia during the 2011 International Festival of
Journalism.
11. Every price will be paid cash for the amount of 40%. The remaining 60% will consist in a journey to discover Umbria and its local products.
12. Prizes not collected personally by the authors will remain in the availability of Chambers of Commerce of Perugia and Terni.
13. The decisions and the reasons expressed by the Jury Panel are final. Chambers of
Commerce reserve the right to make appropriate amendments to these Rules if
necessary, by adequate publicity on their institutional websites.
General Information
In connection with anything not expressly provided for in these rules, decisions are up to the Chambers of Commerce. The Organizing Secretariat of the award is by the Chamber of Commerce of Perugia. The Chamber of Commerce of Perugia guarantees the use of personal data in accordance to law. The Chamber of Commerce of Perugia reserves the right to publish all the works on their own media, in obedience to original texts and images.

Call for entries 2011
The Perugia and Terni Chambers of Commerce have set up the second edition of Stories on Umbria journalism award. The competition is addressed to articles and TV programmes covering issues of artisticcultural-environmental highlights and high-quality economic system of the region, improving Umbria visibility both in Italy and worldwide.
Rules
1. Participation in the competition is free and implies full acceptance of the rules.
2. The competition is divided into three sections:
Traditional press articles: photo-journalistic articles published in 2010 in Italy or abroad; Television: TV reports broadcasted in 2010 in Italy or abroad; Web articles: web articles published in the net in 2010.
3. Articles and programmes can be sent also as the result of a team work. Each author can submit only two pieces of work.
4. Works must be sent to the Organizing Secretariat of the Competition not later than March 13, 2011: Chamber of Commerce of Perugia, Press and Communication Office, Via Cacciatori delle Alpi, 42 - 06121 Perugia - Italy, email: urp@pg.camcom.it. Competitors must also send the entry form – duly filled in and signed – and a brief curriculum vitae.
